Everyday Health: Suneel Kamath, assistant professor of medicine at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, explained how beef and other red meats are considered some of the highest-risk foods for developing colorectal cancer because they contain a compound called heme iron, which can increase the formation of cancer-causing N-nitroso compounds. “An unhealthy gut microbiome—more bad bacteria—has been associated with this type of diet,” said Kamath.
