US News & World Report: Brian Appleby, professor of medicine and director of the university’s National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center, explained how doctors can often identify Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) by looking at brain tissue under a microscope and testing for prion proteins, which can lead to fast-moving dementia. Genetic testing can also show if the case was inherited.
