Olin Hall renovation recognized for design excellence
The renovation of Olin Hall at Case Western Reserve University has received a Cincinnati Design Award, recognizing the thoughtful transformation of one of the university’s longstanding academic buildings. The project received the highest award level of “honor,” recognizing “design conceived and executed at the highest levels.”
Originally opened in 1962 as the Olin Laboratory for Materials, the building was made possible by a $1.6 million gift from the Olin Foundation—at the time the largest donation in the history of the Case Institute of Technology. For more than six decades, Olin Hall has served generations of students and faculty. But in recent years, its inward-facing design and dated interior no longer reflected the energy or ambitions of its residents in the Department of Computer and Data Sciences.
The renovation reimagined Olin Hall as a visible, welcoming hub along the
Case Quad. A new entry and spacious lobby draw students into a light-filled space that connects collaboration areas, teaching labs and gathering spaces across multiple floors. Glass walls replace once-solid corridors, putting research and learning on display while bringing natural light into the building. Program spaces were reorganized to position active student areas near the entrance and quieter offices above, creating a dynamic academic hub.
At the same time, the project honored the integrity of the original 1960s structure. Sustainable upgrades—including new insulation and energy-efficient systems—extend the building’s lifespan, while preserved terrazzo floors and exposed structural elements celebrate its history.
The renewal was made possible in part through the philanthropy of Kevin Kranzusch (CIT ’90) and Lynne Bosworth, whose multiyear, $20 million commitment has provided transformational support for the computer and data sciences department. A modernized Olin Hall stands as an example of how CWRU pairs visionary donor support with intentional design to create meaningful, future-focused spaces for learning and discovery.
