Gut bacteria produce sugar that may trigger brain cell damage
Earth: Aaron Burberry, assistant professor of pathology at the School of Medicine, noted that he found a sugar produced by certain gut bacteria may trigger immune responses that damage the brain in ALS and FTD. His research suggests gut bacteria may actively drive neurodegeneration, pointing to bacterial glycogen as a possible early marker and treatment target.
