Officers often serve as a buffer to help mitigate tragic and unfortunate outcomes, and trauma-informed policing can change the dynamics of encounters and influence the trajectory of lives.

Since December, Sarah Shendy, a police lieutenant in the Case Western Reserve University Division of Public Safety, has led classes for local law enforcement and emergency management personnel to discuss the cause and effects of childhood trauma. These classes also examine the Adverse Childhood Experiences’ study as it relates to policing and roles as social services providers.

These classes aim to educate first responders on how childhood trauma, abuse and neglect impact every aspect of life, including mental and physical health and wellbeing.
