U.S. News and World Report: Timothy Black, professor of sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences, said that the “middle class” is as much about identity and status as income, but rising costs have eroded the financial security once associated with it. He also notes that middle-class status is often linked to supervisory roles rather than income alone.
