1950s

Ron Botsko (CIT ’59) received the 2022 Philip D. Johnson Honorary Member Award from the American Society for Nondestructive Testing Inc. Botsko is a retired business and engineering consultant whose achievements include several patents and the development of a variety of nondestructive testing instruments, that is, tools that evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage.

1960s

Jeffrey Marks (LAW ’69) is assistant law director for the City of Cleveland. He was hired by former Cleveland Mayor Carl B. Stokes in 1969 and has since served seven other mayors and 19 law directors.

1970s

Ron Roth (ADL ’70) authored The Civil War in the South Carolina Lowcountry: How a Confederate Artillery Battery and a Black Union Regiment Defined the War (McFarland). The book, which On Point: Journal of Army History described as “masterful,” highlights the often-overlooked role of Black troops in the Union war effort and ultimate victory.

David Satcher (MED ’70; GRS ’70, anatomy; HON ’90) was honored at the Thomas J. Blocker Society Living Legends Gala before the 2022 National Medical Association Annual Convention in Atlanta. Satcher was a four-star admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and served as the 10th assistant secretary for health, and the 16th surgeon general.

John D. Flynn (LAW ’74, MGT ’80), is mayor of Bella Vista, Arkansas, a city in the Springfield Plateau of the Ozark Mountains with a population of about 30,000. It also has seven lakes and 100 miles of bike trails.

Linda Moser (WRC ’74) is on the foundation board of the State University of New York Westchester Community College in Valhalla, New York. Moser is a consultant with the business advisory company, JDS partners.

Richard C. Spain (LAW ’75) and Nancy M. Spain (LAW ’76) are partners in the Chicago office of the Hahn Loeser & Parks law firm. In 2022, the couple’s Spain, Spain & Varnet PC estate planning law firm focusing on people with disabilities, merged with Hahn Loeser.

Lee Fisher (LAW ’76, MNO ’05) was inducted into the Cleveland Business Hall of Fame in 2022. Fisher is dean of Cleveland State University’s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and holds the Joseph C. Hostetler- BakerHostetler Chair in Law. In his diverse career, Fisher has served as Ohio attorney general, Ohio lieutenant governor and a member of the Ohio Senate and Ohio House of Representatives.

Joe L. Hargrove (MED ’76) was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame. Hargrove was the first Black cardiologist to practice in the state, and today practices with CHI St. Vincent Heart Clinic Arkansas in Little Rock.

Patrick McLaughlin (LAW ’76) is vice chair of the Ohio Board of Professional Conduct. His one-year term began in January.

Deborrah Hyde (MED ’77) was celebrated for her groundbreaking career as a neurosurgeon with a street named in her honor in her hometown of Laurel, Mississippi. Hyde is a physician at Ellisville State School in Ellisville, Mississippi. In 1984, Hyde became the first African American woman to receive board certification from the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

Nancy J. Nersessian (GRS ’77, philosophy) authored Interdisciplinarity in the Making: Models and Methods in Frontier Science (MIT Press). The book describes a decades-long study of how bioengineering researchers approach problem-solving.

Bill Roemer (WRC ’78, MGT ’82) was elected to a third term in the Ohio House of Representatives in District 31 representing northern and western Summit County. Additionally, he was named chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee for the 135th General Assembly.

Howard M. Stein (LAW ’78) is managing partner and co-chair of the Real Estate Group at Certilman Balin Adler & Hyman, LLP. Stein has been with the Long Island, New York, firm since 1979.

1980s

David C. Preston (CIT ’81, MED ’85) received the 2022 Jun Kimura Outstanding Educator Award from the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Preston is a neurology professor at Case Western Reserve’s School of Medicine and holds several titles with University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, including neurology residency program director and director of the Neurological Institute’s Neuromuscular Ultrasound Laboratory.

Michael Fine (MED ’83) authored On Medicine as Colonialism (PM Press) and presented on the topic for the Population Health Research Institute seminar series at the MetroHealth System in Cleveland. In the book, Fine examines what he sees as the negative impact of America’s for-profit healthcare system on individuals, communities and democracy. Fine is chief health strategist for Central Falls, Rhode Island.

Karen V. Nathan (LAW ’89) is a partner in the Chicago office of Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani, representing healthcare professionals in state and federal court medical malpractice litigation.

Rosemonde Pierre-Louis (LAW ’89) is executive director of the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research at New York University. She leads a team of researchers, policy experts and other professionals in studying the root causes of poverty and developing evidence-based interventions to address its consequences.

1990s

Elicia Pegues Spearman (LAW ’90) is director of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s North Atlantic Region. She serves as general counsel and vice president of human resources at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut.

Glenda Gillaspy (GRS ’91, biochemistry) is professor emerita of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. She previously headed the university’s biochemistry department in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Paul Mraz (GRS ’91, mechanical engineering) is president and CEO of FzioMed Inc., which is based in San Luis Obispo, California, and develops, manufactures and distributes surgical biomaterials designed to prevent internal scarring. Mraz has worked in the life sciences industry for more than 30 years.

Umesh Rao (GRS ’93, electrical engineering and applied physics; GRS ’97, systems control and engineering) is a principal design engineer with the research and product development company Alcon Research in Goleta, California.

Fiona Chambers (CWR ’94) is Northeast Ohio managing partner for Deloitte, which provides audit, tax, consulting and advisory services. Chambers lives in Westlake, Ohio, and serves on the accountancy advisory board at CWRU Weatherhead School of Management.

Larissa N. Niec Davila (GRS ’94, ’98, psychology) is a certified parent-child interaction therapy trainer and director of the Center for Children, Families, and Communities at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Davila is the author of the three-volume fantasy Sky Seekers series (Stone Raven Press).

Charles Martin (CWR ’94) is chief information officer for the transportation company Tucker Freight Lines, in Dubuque, Iowa.

Michael P. Robic II (LAW ’94), of Pittsburgh, is vice president, deputy general counsel at Highmark Health, a national health organization.

Terrence E. Steyer (MED ’94) is dean of the College of Medicine and vice president for Medical Affairs at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He also holds the Gregory- Chandler Endowed Chair in Family Medicine.

Joe Barker (CWR ’95) is president, senior estimator and designer of Petroleum Equipment Inc. in Milwaukee. He is the fourth generation to run the family-owned company, which designs and maintains fuel systems for a variety of markets, including aviation, healthcare and government.

Tshilidzi Marwala (CWR ’95) is serving a five-year term as under-secretary general of the United Nations and rector of the United Nations University in Tokyo. The postgraduate research institution is the academic arm of the U.N. and focuses on governance, global development and environmental protection. Marwala was previously chancellor and principal of the University of Johannesburg, where he worked in various capacities since 2009.

Matt Stapleton (NUR ’95) is chief operating officer of American Physician Partners, a medical clinic in Brentwood, Tennessee.

Christopher Johansen (MGT ’96), of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, received a grant from the U.S. Department of State’s Citizen Diplomacy Action Fund to research the evolution of culture rooted in the African diaspora in the Americas, and work with Uruguayans to promote candombe, a culturally significant style of music and dance brought to the country by enslaved Africans.

Margaret M. Murray (LAW ’96) is recognized in the 2023 list of the Best Lawyers in America. Murray is a partner with the Sandusky, Ohio, personal injury firm, Murray & Murray.

William Ferry (CWR ’97) is commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla based at Station Lorain in Lorain, Ohio. The civilian volunteer unit is responsible for recreational boating safety education and vessel inspections along Lake Erie’s southern shore. Ferry also is counsel to the Black River Safe Boating Association and practices estate and business-succession planning law. Ferry and his wife, Amanda C. Ferry (MED ’97), live in Bay Village, Ohio.

Matt Stein (CWR ’97) is chief technology officer at Medical Mutual of Ohio. Stein has been with the Cleveland-based company since 2011, most recently serving as vice president of enterprise technology development and innovation.

Hiroyuki Fujita (GRS ’98, physics), an alumnus of Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois, was inducted into the school’s Hall of Achievement. Fujita is founder and CEO of Quality Electrodynamics, a global developer and MRI technology manufacturer headquartered in Cleveland.

Marie Vibbert (CWR ’98) authored a fantasy novel, The Gods Awoke (Journey Press) and co-authored a thriller, MegaDeath (Level 4 Press), with Tory Quinn, each released in 2022. Vibbert is a programmer at the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve.

William McConico (LAW ’99) is chief judge of Michigan’s 36th District Court in Detroit. McConico helped settle a federal class-action lawsuit in 2022, resulting in reforms that limit use of cash bail after finding that the practice discriminates against poor and working-class defendants who lack the ability to pay.

2000s

Col. Kyle B. Grygo (CWR ’00), a colonel in the U.S. Air Force, graduated from the U.S. Naval War College with a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies in 2022. He is commander of the 51st Mission Support Group at Osan Air Base in South Korea.

Stephanie (Thomas) Kemler (CWR ’01), of Wyncote, Pennsylvania, authored Bloodmad (Curious Corvid), the second novel in her vampire romance series.

Adam Snyder (CWR ’02, MGT ’03) is chief operating officer of the metal-stamping company Talan Products in Cleveland.

Adele Luta (GRS ’04, physics) is the xEVA (extravehicular activity) integration project manager and human systems business development manager at Oceaneering Space Systems in Houston, Texas. She is part of the team redesigning the spacesuit, known as the extravehicular mobility unit, for the International Space Station.

Stephanie Dorsey (MGT ’05), of Cleveland, is CEO of Siemens Real Estate Services, North America.

John Genovesi (MGT ’05) is executive vice president and president of the Enterprise and Advisory Segment at UL Solutions in Austin, Texas, where he guides the safety science company’s global business strategy, software delivery and consulting services.

India Pierce Lee (SAS ’05) is executive vice president and chief strategy officer of Cuyahoga Community College. She is focused on strategic goals and initiatives to advance student success, improve the employee experience and deepen community engagement. Pierce Lee was previously senior vice president of the Cleveland Foundation.

Rick Simmons (MGT ’05) recruited 12 colleagues at Telos Institute to compete in the 2022 Hood to Coast relay race, which starts at Oregon’s Mount Hood and continues nearly 200 miles to the Oregon Coast. Simmons is CEO of Telos Institute, a Cleveland- based development firm he co-founded with his wife, Amy Simmons (MGT ’05).

Kevin Campbell (MGT ’06) is on the board of Plumbing Manufacturers International. He also is president of Moen Americas, responsible for strategy, product management and sales leadership in the United States, Canada and Latin America.

Amy Elizabeth Gilman (GRS ’06, art history) is a member of the National Museum and Library Services Board, which advises the Institute of Museum and Library Services on general policies and the annual selection of recipients of national medals. She was appointed by President Joe Biden in August 2022 and will serve a five-year term. Gilman is director of the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin- Madison.

Sachin Vijay Java (CWR ’06; GRS ’07, engineering and management) is president of the Asian American Bar Association of Ohio and was recently named to the 2022 Crain’s Cleveland Business Forty Under 40 list. Java is an associate attorney with Cleveland firm Ulmer & Berne, specializing in corporate law.

Valissa Howard (LAW ’07) received the Ohio State Bar Foundation’s Community Service Award for attorneys 40 and under in recognition of her work in diversity, equity and inclusion for the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association. Howard is vice president of talent and legal affairs at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank.

Shardule Shah (MGT ’07) is a member of Harvard Business School’s 2022-2023 Blavatnik Fellowship in Life Science Entrepreneurship program, an initiative that provides resources and mentorship for alumni developing life science technologies. Shah, who received his MBA from Harvard, is CEO and co-founder of Lime Therapeutics, a New York City-based Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center spinoff that develops lipid-targeting drugs for treating cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.

Jaclyn Catherine Staple (CWR ’07; GRS ’08, art) is a partner at the Houston, Texas, firm Jackson Walker, specializing in labor and employment law.

Angelina Bair (CWR ’08) is a teen librarian at Cuyahoga Falls Library in Ohio.

Megan Center (CWR ’09, LAW ’12) is a law partner with Quarles & Brady in Washington, D.C., representing franchisors in a variety of industries.

2010s

Eva Chan-Scheurich (MGT ’10), of New York City, is senior vice president of business development at the media agency UM Worldwide, leading multimillion-dollar business opportunities.

Joe Dickman (CWR ’10; GRS ’10, mechanical engineering) was part of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory team that carried out NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART). The October 2022 test was successful, marking “humanity’s first time purposely changing the motion of a celestial object and the first full-scale demonstration of asteroid deflection technology,” according to a press release from Johns Hopkins. Dickman led the design, manufacturing, assembly and delivery of optomechanical instruments, such as telescopes, to the DART spacecraft. Dickman is a senior optomechanical engineer with IonQ, a quantum computing company based in College Park, Maryland.

James Pasch (LAW ’10) is senior director of national litigation for the Anti-Defamation League. Pasch also is a board member of the Case Western Reserve University School of Law Alumni Association.

Scott M. Angelo (MGT ’11) is chief information officer of the Pittsburgh firm, Buchanan Ingersoll & Roone. Angelo is responsible for the firm’s information technology and risk management platforms, and leads efforts involving technology strategic planning, and security and data privacy management.

Madeline Dennis (CWR ’11, LAW ’14), an attorney with Cleveland firm Tucker Ellis LLP, was named to the 2023 Ohio Rising Stars list. Dennis’ focus is defending medical device and pharmaceutical companies against product liability and personal injury claims.

Selman Özdan (LAW ’11) authored The Human Rights Challenge to Immunity in International Law (Palgrave Macmillan). In the book, he argues that immunity should not equate to impunity when diplomats violate fundamental human rights. Özdan is an assistant professor of international public law at Ondokuz Mayıs University in Samsun, Turkey.

William Jacobson (MED ’14, DEN ’15) authored Clinical Dentistry Daily Reference Guide (Wiley-Blackwell), a compilation of guidelines and images designed to help students and practitioners navigate common clinical scenarios. Jacobson is a general dentist at One Community Health in Sacramento, California, and an assistant clinical professor of preventive and restorative dental sciences at the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry.

Amber Beserra (CWR ’15, MED ’18) leads a team of 14 critical care advanced practice providers in the Stanford Medicine healthcare system in Stanford, California.

Deborah Dillon (NUR ’15) is director of the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. In 2022, Dillon was inducted as a fellow in both the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Nursing.

Allison Sayre (NUR ’15) is an associate professor of nursing at West Virginia University at Parkersburg. She received a Nurse Excellence Award from the West Virginia Future of Nursing Action Coalition. She was honored in part for her “pursuit for excellence” and leading by example.

Meenakshi Sharma (MGT ’16) is senior vice president and chief strategy officer at Cleveland Museum of Natural History, where she has worked since 2018.

Roy Gifford (GRS ’17, management) is vice president and chief marketing and communications officer at Cleveland State University. Gifford was previously vice president and chief marketing officer at Northern Kentucky University.

Mustafa Ünal (GRS ’17, biomechanics) is an associate professor of biomedical engineering and biophysics at Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University in Karaman, Turkey.

Peter Hargrave (GRS ’18, theater) plays Scar in the North American tour of The Lion King. A review in the Chicago Sun Times called his performance “enthralling… able to strike fear into your heart while also evoking laughter.”

Juan Valdez (SAS ’18) is a therapist and licensed alcohol and drug counselor practicing in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Valdez’s struggle with addiction while in the U.S. Army drove him to become a mental health practitioner after being honorably discharged. He aims to help fellow veterans and shed light on the way active military personnel can be penalized for substance abuse disorders.

Zoe Ruolin Yang (CWR ’18; GRS ’18, accounting) was named to Alexandria, Virginia Chamber of Commerce’s 40 Under 40 list, published by Zebra Press. Yang is accounting manager at the International Association for Dental Research and co-founder of the Paragon Philharmonia ensemble. She lives in the Washington, D.C., area.

2020s

Pranita Dharmadhikari (LAW ’20) founded the intellectual property research firm Innocelf, in Macomb, Michigan, soon after graduating from Case Western Reserve.

Madison Goske (SAS ’20) was honored with the 2022 Emerging Leader of the Year award by the Region 4, Ohio Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Goske is a social worker with Voice of Hope Shelter in Northeast Ohio.

Tobili Hatcher (CWR ’20) is assistant director of individual giving at Columbia Business School in New York City. Hatcher was previously assistant director of alumni engagement at Case Western Reserve and completed her MBA at Cleveland State University in 2022.

Kendall McConico (CWR ’21) is a screenwriter with the streaming service SDM Flix in Detroit, and a freelance videographer.
