1950s

Daniel Tilles Weidenthal (MED ’58), of Beachwood, Ohio, is an ophthalmologist who developed retinal detachment repair techniques. He committed a gift to the College of Engineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in East Greensboro, North Carolina, to endow the Dr. Leonard C. Uitenham and Dr. Daniel T. Weidenthal Endowed Professorship in Bioengineering in the Department of Chemical, Mechanical and Bioengineering. His gift honors his friend and mentee Leonard Curtis Uitenham (CIT ’75; GRS ’81, ’85, macromolecular science), a professor emeritus in the department.

1960s

Edward Horvath (ADL ’68), of Bay Village, Ohio, was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame. Horvath was recognized for his accomplishments as a physician, researcher, educator, public health advocate and community servant in his time after his military service. He is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.

1970s

Mark Corson (ADL ’70) of Bay Village, Ohio, won first place in the Edgewater Yacht Club JAM B Class for the 2024 sailing season. The class name refers to a division in which racers use a specific sail setup.

Glenn Ramsey (WRC ’74, MED ’78) received the New College of American Pathologists’ 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to the college related to the field of transfusion medicine. He is a professor of pathology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and the medical director of the blood bank at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Leonard Curtis Uitenham (CIT ’75; GRS ’81, ’85, macromolecular science) is a professor emeritus in the Department of Chemical, Mechanical and Bioengineering at the College of Engineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in East Greensboro, North Carolina. He is one of the namesakes of the Dr. Leonard C. Uitenham and Dr. Daniel T. Weidenthal Endowed Professorship in Bioengineering in the department.

Daniel Tilles Weidenthal (MED ’58), an ophthalmologist from Beachwood, Ohio, committed the gift to endow the professorship in honor of Uitenham, a friend and mentee.

Martin Jaffe (LYS ’76), a singer-songwriter from Rocky River, Ohio, will present a series of programs at the Cuyahoga County Library system through this September. Jaffe performs under the name Congito Jaffe. He retired in 2018 from Jewish Family Services in Beachwood, Ohio, where he worked as a career counselor.

Mary Anthony (NUR ’77; GRS ’95, nursing), of Solon, Ohio, was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing during its 2024 Health Policy Conference. Anthony is a Kent State University College of Nursing professor emerita and a former associate dean for research at Kent State. Anthony’s research focuses on nursing-care delivery models and the work environment for nurses.

Gary Lehman (MGT ’79) is chair of the Board of Trustees of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. He is the retired chair and CEO of Oerlikon Fairfield, an engineered gear and drive product manufacturer, and is the founder of Cannelton Group, which provides consulting services to middle-market manufacturers.

JoAnn Elisabeth Manson (MED ’79) received the Outstanding Clinical Investigator Award from the Endocrine Society. She was honored for her contributions to the understanding of estrogen therapy’s role across different stages of menopause, and launching the VITAL Study, an investigation of the effects of daily supplementation of vitamin D or omega-3 fatty acids.

Norma Quintana (SAS ’79), a photographer from Napa, California, is continuing her Forget Me Not portrait series. The project began as a celebration of everyday heroes such as veterans, surgeons and teachers. Recuerdos, the series’s newest phase, aims to incorporate the history of the Puerto Rican diaspora. The title is a Spanish word for memories.

1980s

Gary DeWood (DEN ’80) is director of essentials at the Pankey Institute, a nonprofit that provides continuing education for dental professionals in Key Biscayne, Florida. He oversees the four-course Essentials curriculum. DeWood also runs a private practice at Desert Sun Smiles in Glendale, Arizona, and has taught dental medicine at the university level.

Stephen Collins (GRS ’81, anatomy; MED ’84) is chief medical officer of Bright Minds Biosciences, a manufacturer of therapies for epilepsy and other central nervous system (CNS) disorders. He was previously CEO of Biscayne Neurotherapeutics and president and CEO of its parent company, Biscayne Pharmaceuticals. Collins also led CNS drug development at Abbott Laboratories and Johnson & Johnson.

Benjamin Friedell (MED ’81), of Oneonta, New York, was honored with the 2024 Compassionate Care Award from Helios Care, a hospice organization. He has been a primary care and geriatrics physician for 40 years and is the founder of the Oneonta Community Health Center free clinic for uninsured adults.

Roger Friedman (WRC ’81) a retired podiatrist, created the photograph of a hummingbird clearwing moth that is on the 2025 Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp. Proceeds from the stamp’s sales will be donated to Ohio wildlife conservation causes. Friedman lives in Westlake, Ohio.

Annie Sobel (MED ’83) is an adjunct research staff member at the Institute for Defense Analyses, which manages three federally funded research and development centers and is based outside Washington, D.C.

Jane Dus (NUR ’85) was appointed a governor-at-large for the National League for Nursing. She is senior vice president and chief nursing officer-Midwest Region for Advocate Health, a faith-based, nonprofit healthcare system headquartered in Downers Grove, Illinois. The National League for Nursing is a professional organization for nursing education.

Byl Herrmann (LAW ’87), of Washington, D.C., is executive vice president and general counsel for Amtrak. Herrmann has worked in the company’s law department for 25 years, serving in various roles. Most recently, he was vice president and senior managing deputy general counsel and assistant corporate secretary.

Leslie Yerkes (GRS ’89, organizational development and analysis) authored You Left Your Paw Prints on My Heart, the third book in a series for young readers about grieving pet loss. Yerkes is an organizational development and change management consultant and president of the Cleveland-based Catalyst Consulting Group Inc.

1990s

Joseph Burke (LAW ’90) was elected as a judge on the Rocky River Municipal Court in Rocky River, Ohio, to serve a six-year term that started in January.

L. Danielle Koch (CWR ’90; GRS ’98, fluid and thermal science) is an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Koch is an aerospace engineer who performs research and facilitates community outreach efforts for NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. Her research involves the development of cleaner and quieter aircraft engines, spacecraft ventilation and other components. She has authored more than 50 technical publications and holds three patents.

Natalia Scherbakoff (GRS ’91, ’93, macromolecular science) is chief technology officer of Orion S.A., a global supplier of carbon black based in Spring, Texas.

Ken Holloway (CWR ’92, MGT ’94) was named to the 18th class of the St. Clairsville Athletic Hall of Fame. Holloway was recognized for his achievements as a football, basketball and baseball player while a student at St. Clairsville High School in St. Clairsville, Ohio. He teaches math and coaches football at Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, Tennessee.

Angela Zakon (CWR ’92) is a senior certified public accountant (CPA) at the New Hampshire-based Leone, McDonnell & Roberts CPA firm. She has been with the firm since 2008 and specializes in tax and audit services.

Alan Olson (CWR ’93) graduated from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary with a Doctor of Ministry degree. He is pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Freehold, New Jersey.

Rachel Madorsky (SAS ’96) wrote and illustrated How to Love Yourself In Less Than a Week & Also For The Rest of Your Life (Highlander Press). Selected for Ellen DeGeneres’ Holiday Gift Box, the book provides a toolkit for replacing self-judgment with love, joy and ease.

Barbara Ann Kuemerle (GRS ’97, genetics) is the author of KRISPR (BookBaby). Published under the pen name Jennifer Handler, the novel is about a young scientist who must grapple with the ethical implications of gene-editing technology. Kuemerle lives in Avon Lake, Ohio, and is a senior instructor in the department of biology at Case Western Reserve.

Girish Bhambhani (MGT ’98) is a sales leader at Amazon Web Services for healthcare and life sciences. Bhambhani lives in Fallston, Maryland.

Stephanie Harley (LAW ’98) is a principal at the Cleveland office of Jackson Lewis P.C., a national employment law firm. She has more than two decades of experience in employment counseling and litigation.

Vikram Karnani (GRS ’98, electrical engineering and applied physics) is president and chief executive officer of Collegium Pharmaceutical, a Stoughton, Massachusetts-based manufacturer of pain management medications, neuropsychiatry therapies and other drugs. Karnani joined the company after serving as executive vice president and president, global commercial operations and medical affairs (rare disease) at Amgen, a biotechnology company headquartered in Hudson, Ohio.

Ali Manav (MGT ’98) is interim CEO of Basanite Industries, a manufacturer of basalt fiber composite products for construction applications based in Pompano Beach, Florida. Manav has more than three decades of experience across industries, including banking, information technology, building materials and healthcare.

2000s

Trish Gorman (GRS ’00, management) is dean of the Gail Miller School of Business at Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah. For 30 years, Gorman facilitated executive business programming across more than 100 corporations and universities, including Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania and Duke University.

Carmina Mares (LAW ’01, MGT ’20) joined Case Western Reserve’s Office of General Counsel as associate university compliance officer and was named to the board of directors of the Northeast Ohio Fulbright Association.

Ronald Means (MED ’02) is chief of medical staff at Sheppard Pratt, a psychiatric facility in Towson, Maryland. He joined Sheppard Pratt after serving as chief medical officer of Catholic Charities of Baltimore, where he played an integral role in developing and implementing clinical care policies, supervising psychiatrists and nurse practitioners, and treating patients in crisis and at the outpatient level.

Samuel Monti (MGT ’02) is chief financial officer of WP Engine, a website hosting company for use with the WordPress content management system.

Anna Rivkin (GRS ’02, neurosciences) is chief business officer of Foghorn Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotechnology company producing therapies to correct abnormal gene expression and treat disease. Rivkin previously served as vice president of business development at pharmaceutical company Bristol Myers Squibb, where she led strategic transactions related to neuroscience, cardiovascular disease and immunology.

Dohm Chankong (CWR ’03; GRS ’03, computer engineering) is a director at Sterne, Kessler Goldstein & Fox, an intellectual property law firm headquartered in Washington, D.C. He is a part of the Electronics Practice Group and has two decades of patent-law expertise in communication technology issues, particularly in matters related to wireless charging and media streaming.

Steve Landers (MED ’03) is the inaugural CEO of the NAHC-HHPCO Alliance, which unites the National Association for Home Care & Hospice and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. He was president and CEO of the Visiting Nurse Association Health Group for more than 11 years and most recently served as president and CEO of Hebrew SeniorLife, a geriatric-care company in the Boston area.

William Morris (MED ’03, MGT ’17) is chief medical officer of Ambience Healthcare, an artificial intelligence-based healthcare-administration platform. He previously served as chief medical information officer for Google Cloud Healthcare and Life Sciences.

Diane Santa Maria (NUR ’03) received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. The award is the highest honor given by the U.S. government to professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics early in their careers. It recognizes exceptional potential for leadership. Santa Maria has dedicated more than a decade to HIV prevention, particularly among unhoused youth. She is dean of the Cizik School of Nursing at The University of Texas Health Science Center.

Elizabeth Pund (CWR ’04) received a Master of Science in Computer Science from Georgia Tech University.

John Deitzer (CWR ’05), of Venetia, Pennsylvania, is vice president and chief financial officer of Aktore Inc., an electrical products manufacturer for the telecommunications, solar and data industries, and multiple commercial and industrial markets.

Susan Kornatowski (CWR ’05, LAW ’08) is principal in the HW&Co. CPA and business advisory firm. She is a member of the firm’s Private Business Advisory Department, providing tax planning services, financial reporting and analysis, and business consulting to clients in fields including real estate and the nonprofit sector.

Brent Blouch (MGT ’06) is president of Swagelok, an industrial fluid systems manufacturer based in Solon, Ohio. He also is chief operating officer, a position he has held since 2023. Blouch serves on the boards of the Greater Cleveland Partnership, a network of Northeast Ohio businesses, and Business Volunteers Unlimited, which connects area businesses to community service opportunities.

Ronald-Stéphane Gilbert (MGT ’06), of Beachwood, Ohio, authored Conversations With My Mother: a Novel of Dementia on the Maine Coast (Rootstock Publishing). It is a work of fiction inspired by his family’s experience. The book tells of a woman’s struggle with cognitive decline and her children’s attempts to cope as caregivers.

Joe Brenner (CWR ’07) is technical director, bridge technologies at Michael Baker International, an engineering, planning and consulting firm based in Cleveland. Brenner has worked for 17 years in the construction industry and the last three with Michael Baker. He most recently served as a regional technical manager for the company.

J. Jekkie Kim (MGT ’08) is a partner at the Palo Alto, California, office of Wilmer-Hale, a multinational law firm. Kim provides guidance to life science companies, investors and lenders.

Erin Simmons (LAW ’09) is an associate for the matrimonial law firm Aronson Mayefsky & Sloan in New York City.

2010s

Hayley Cotter (LAW ’11) is of counsel in the labor and employment group at the Boston, Massachusetts-based Mirick O’Connell law firm.

Madeline Dennis (CWR ’11, LAW ’14) was named a partner at the law firm Tucker Ellis in Cleveland, where she defends hospitals, physicians, and medical device and pharmaceutical companies against product liability and personal injury claims.

Emily Hoffman (CWR ’11) received the Distinguished New Engineer award from the Society of Women Engineers. She was recognized for her service to the society’s annual conference, commitment to her field of rare-disease pharmaceutical consulting and her leadership role in New York City’s cycling community. Hoffman lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Thomas Kraynak (CWR ’11) is an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. He is the principal investigator on a National Institute of Mental Health grant. His research uses brain imaging and brain stimulation methods to study emotional responses to psychological stress.

Apurba Das (GRS ’12, mechanical engineering) is chief technology officer of Heliogen, a solar energy technology company based in Pasadena, California. Das has been with the company since 2021 as vice president of engineering for process and power systems, and will oversee plant design and engineering in his new role. He served in previous roles with nuclear energy startup Kairos Power and GE Renewable Energy. Mark

Francis Silvaggio (LAW ’12) is a director at GBQ Partners, a tax, accounting and business consulting firm based in Columbus, Ohio. He joined the firm after working for 15 years as a director at the accounting firm PwC, where he served real estate, utility maintenance manufacturing, retail and pharmaceutical clients.

David Vitatoe (MGT ’12) is president of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio. Vitatoe previously served as interim vice president of advancement at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) as well as president of the NEOMED Foundation.

Jonathan Wlasiuk (GRS ’12, history) authored An Alternative History of Cleveland (Belt Publishing), which examines the region through a prehistoric lens.

Trevor Hardy (LAW ’13) is a shareholder at the Cleveland office of Littler, an employment law firm. He primarily serves clients facing complex leave and accommodations issues. Hardy is also an adjunct faculty member at CWRU’s School of Law, where he teaches disability law.

Sheila Pabon (MED ’13) is a board-certified ophthalmologist with cornea and anterior segment surgery specialties. She joined the staff of the Atlantic Eye Institute, which has offices in Jacksonville and St. Augustine, Florida.

Amanda Yoho (GRS ’15, physics) is president of Proformex, an annuity and life insurance policy monitoring company based in Cleveland. Yoho previously served as the company’s chief technology officer, developing new data-related processes.

Alexander Brown (LAW ’16) of New Stanton, Pennsylvania, is a commissioner on the Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Appeal Board. He is an associate attorney for the Meyer, Darragh, Buckler, Bebeneck & Eck law firm, where he focuses on insurance, federal civil rights, torts and commercial issues.

Yifan Dai (CWR ’17; GRS ’20, chemical engineering), an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, was named to Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the Science category. He hopes to develop synthetic therapeutics for neurodegenerative disorders.

Beth Magid (CWR ’17), of Los Angeles, is production supervisor in the development department at Walt Disney Animation Studios. She worked on the animated film Moana 2, briefly serving as production supervisor for characters and lighting.

Patrick Farese (CWR ’18), of Northport, Michigan, received the Builders Exchange of Northwest Michigan’s Rising Star award. The honor recognizes a young construction professional who demonstrates exceptional potential in the industry. Farese is a project manager for the Miller Davis construction company.

Holger Sonntag (LAW ’18) was one of eight recipients of the William V. Tanner Award. Named for the youngest attorney general in the history of Washington State, the award recognizes outstanding achievement in the recipients’ legal careers. Sonntag is an assistant attorney general for Washington State.

2020s

Denise Caviness (SAS ’20) earned a licensed independent social worker certification and is an adjunct field liaison at Cleveland State University.

Christine Mahoney (NUR ’21) is senior vice president and chief nursing officer of Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, New York. She previously served as chief nursing officer, senior vice president at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in Manhattan and vice president of critical care nursing for the Mount Sinai Health System.

John Patrick Murray (LAW ’21) is an associate attorney at the Cleveland office of the law firm McGlinchey Stafford, where he represents financial services companies in various litigation matters.

Ellyn Evans (GRS ’22, biology) is an assistant professor of biology at Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Jacob Shaw (CWR ’22, GRS ’23, engineering and management) collaborated with other alumni and Case Western Reserve fourth-year students who play brass and woodwind instruments to create a virtual concert series playlist in commemoration of the university’s 2024 Homecoming and Reunion Weekend. The playlist can be found on the JShaw Productions YouTube channel.

Laura Baranek (MGT ’23) is director of integration for NorthBay Health, a twohospital healthcare nonprofit based in Fairfield, California.

Noah Boulanger Grindall (CWR ’23) graduated from American University in Washington, D.C., last year with a Master of Arts in Economics degree.
