University farm will offer upcoming courses in November to teach the community the techniques of traditional batik and oyster mushroom production.
Batik on silk workshop
Create art with the inspiring, unique and exciting technique of traditional batik. Learn from Peggy Wertheim, an artist and educator with more than 40 years of experience, who will guide you with individuated instruction to learn wax application and overdye technique. Participants will create one or two silk scarves or pieces of silk fabric for quilting or a silk batik to frame. A wealth of designs, reference books and a handout packet will be provided. No experience necessary. This course will be held Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Green Barn classrooms at Squire Valleevue Farm (37125 Fairmount Blvd., Hunting Valley). This course costs $80 plus a $20 materials fee payable to the artist at the workshop.Oyster mushroom production
Farm Food Program staff member Matt Burtonshaw, who manages the daily operations of the farm's oyster mushroom production, will cover:- The economics;
- Growing requirements
- Equipment needed;
- Sterilization;
- Potential problems; and
- Packaging and harvesting.
