About the Program

One of the only programs of its kind, Case Western Reserve University’s Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) program is the highest degree offered in health law. Designed for students who already hold an advanced law degree such as an LLM or JD from the U.S., this program is ideal for those who aspire to leadership roles in academia, policy and legal practice.

As an SJD candidate, you will join a vibrant community of legal scholars and students dedicated to advancing the field through rigorous research, innovative teaching and impactful healthcare policy analysis.

What to Expect

You’ll complete a tailored program of study based on your academic interests. The Law-Medicine Center offers coursework in bioethics and law, disability law, elder law and more. And you’ll benefit from individualized mentorship and guidance throughout the program. Our faculty members and law librarians will support you in developing your dissertation topic, conducting research and preparing your work for publication.

The SJD in Health Law takes two to four years to complete on average. You’ll graduate prepared for positions in academia, legal research or healthcare policymaking. And, most importantly, you’ll be ready to transform healthcare systems and make a difference in people’s lives.
