About the Program

At Case Western Reserve University, our PhD in Pharmacology program offers a teamwork-driven environment in which you’ll be challenged to think critically and communicate creatively. Here, faculty trainers are from top medical institutions such as Cleveland Clinic, Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, MetroHealth Medical Center and University Hospitals, all eager to share their expertise as they prepare you to lead in your field. With the knowledge you obtain here, you’ll be set for a career as a research scientist, science writer, patent lawyer, professor or a wide variety of other professions.

What to Expect

Our Molecular Therapeutics Training Program in pharmacology is a part of the Biomedical Sciences Training Program, which offers 11 different PhD options under the biomedical sciences umbrella. Thanks to our interdisciplinary approach, you can specialize in pharmacology while also taking electives in related topics. Try courses on topics such as the mechanisms of drug resistance, protein biophysics, and cancer biology and therapeutics in addition to core coursework in cell and molecular biology.

Then, test your research ability with a thesis project on a topic of your choice. You’ll use your findings to form first-author publications for award-winning journals (like many of our students have done).

Our faculty and students have conducted successful studies, from Youwei Zhang’s team identifying potential cancer treatments to Marcin Golczak figuring out the chemical reaction that occurs when onions are cut.

Beyond the Classroom

You’ll be able to give feedback about the program while you’re in it—something we feel strengthens our program year after year. More importantly, this open communication will elevate your leadership capabilities. And that confidence will help you, should you decide to present your work at the departmental journal club, speak at the annual pharmacology retreat or attend an international conference. No matter what, you’ll work closely with faculty to pursue your research interests, forming strong mentor-mentee relationships.
