Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET)

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative therapeutic approach that focuses on helping individuals who are ambivalent about change in their behaviors. MI centers on the individual, supports autonomy and involves specific conversations about change.

Building on this approach, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) is a standardized motivational intervention developed as part of a large study on the treatment of alcohol use disorder. MET was created from the core principles of MI to provide a consistent and measurable approach to motivational interventions. While MI is a general approach, MET offers a more structured, time-limited application of motivational techniques.

In the attached literature and training resources, we review various studies across treatment and cultural contexts to uncover information about effectiveness and outcomes of the MI and MET in the treatment by various substances.
