About

The Udall Scholarship aims to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers related to environmental public policy. It also seeks to encourage outstanding Native American and Alaska Native students to pursue careers related to health care and tribal public policy. Typical majors or areas of study include environmental engineering, the natural sciences, natural resource management, and the social sciences.

Eligibility

Current sophomores and juniors are eligible for consideration. 

You should apply if:

  • You are working toward positive solutions to environmental challenges or to issues impacting Indian country.
  • You have demonstrated your commitment to one of these areas through public service.
  • You inspire and motivate others to take action.
  • You are committed to making a difference through civility and consensus building.

Udall Scholars are selected on the basis of:

  • Commitment to a career related to the environment, or to tribal public policy, or to American Indian health care;
  • Leadership, public service, consensus building, and integrity;
  • Academic achievement
  • An understanding of the Udall legacy, demonstrated through the application essay.

Application Timeline & Procedure

National deadline March 4, 2026
  1. Before Oct. 1: Email Dean Ghosh to schedule an initial advising appointment. This meeting is to discuss your goals and create a plan to compete in the scholarship process.
  2. Oct. 15: Application opens on Udall website
  3. By Nov. 30: Email the required preliminary screening documents to Dean Ghosh.
    • A current resume
    • One letter of recommendation from a CWRU faculty member
    • An unofficial transcript.
    • A draft application, following the questions on the sample Udall application.
  4. December: CWRU's campus selection committee will complete a preliminary review of applications. The campus selection committee consists of faculty representatives and deans from the Office of Undergraduate Advising Support. 
  5. December and January: Campus interviews take place. 
  6. By Feb. 1: Campus nomination deadline. CWRU endorses one nominee for the Beineke Scholarship.
  7. By March 4: National deadline. The selected candidate will work directly with Dean Ghosh on submission to the national competition.

Value of the Award

The Udall Scholarship provides:

  • Access to the Udall Alumni Network: an association of environmental and tribal leaders and public servants sharing innovative ideas, professional advice, and job and internship opportunities.
  • Four days in Tucson, Arizona, at Scholar Orientation: extending your professional network, meeting other scholars and alumni, and learning new skills.
  • Up to $5,000 for eligible academic expenses.
