Instructions for SSRP Faculty Mentor Recommendation

Sponsored Summer Research Program (SSRP) is a faculty-mentored experience. Faculty mentors play a critical role in guiding students through the research process, ensuring the feasibility of the proposed project, and supporting the student’s academic and professional development. Your recommendation is a key component of the review process and helps the application reviewers assess both the quality of the project and the strength of the mentoring plan.

Deadline: February 15

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their faculty mentor submits a letter of recommendation via CampusGroups by February 15, 2026. Student applications are not complete until the recommendation is received.

Recommendation Content

Faculty recommenders will need the student's NetID (abc123) when filling out the recommendation form.  They will also upload a letter in support of the student.

Please address the following points in your recommendation letter:

  • How long and in what capacity have you known the applicant?
  • Please comment on the following aspects of the proposed project:
    • How well-defined are the project's objectives and methods for achieving them?
    • Is the project realistic given the student's access to facilities, materials, training, and other necessary resources?
    • In what ways will this project contribute to the student's academic and professional development?
  • Please describe your role in mentoring this student during the summer, including the frequency and nature of your interactions. If applicable, indicate whether the student will collaborate with others in your research team.
  • Please describe your confidence in the applicant's ability to successfully complete the work and benefit from the research experience.
  • If the student's proposal includes travel, supplies, or equipment expenses, please describe your discussions with the student regarding these needs and how they will be supported.

Thank you for your time and for supporting undergraduate research through the SSRP.
