xLab is Weatherhead School of Management’s business transformation lab, connecting organizations with faculty-led teams of CWRU students to explore opportunities, solve complex challenges, and build practical paths forward.
We work with companies and nonprofit organizations navigating uncertainty, growth, emerging technology, changing customer needs, and major strategic decisions. The “x” in xLab stands for transformation.
Organizations come to xLab when they need added capability, capacity, or perspective. Some are exploring where digital or AI innovation could create value. Others are rethinking a product, service, process, customer experience, business model, or strategic opportunity. Many are looking for a partner who can help them move from ambiguity to action.
xLab brings together faculty expertise, cross-disciplinary student talent, and a structured project methodology designed to produce practical insight, usable deliverables, and momentum.

What makes xLab different?
xLab is not a conventional consulting firm, contractor, internship program, or academic research project. It is a faculty-led university-industry partnership model built around scoped projects, practical deliverables, and student teams with relevant business, technical, research, and communication skills.
Our partners work with cross-disciplinary CWRU talent guided by Weatherhead and CWRU faculty. Students bring current training, energy, and fresh perspective; faculty bring structure, experience, continuity, and judgment.

Flexible ways to engage
Many xLab projects follow the rhythm of the academic year, with teams forming for fall, spring, or summer engagements. But organizational needs do not always follow an academic calendar.
xLab can support flexible rapid-start and follow-on engagements for partners who need to begin sooner, conduct pre-work before a larger project, pursue a shorter focused assessment, or continue improving a solution after an initial project concludes.
For students
xLab gives CWRU students the opportunity to work on real transformation challenges with real organizations. Students build experience in research, strategy, design, technology, communication, teamwork, and execution while contributing to meaningful partner outcomes.
