When to work with xLab
xLab may be a strong fit when your organization is asking questions such as:

Why work with xLab?
xLab is not a conventional consulting firm, contractor, internship program, or academic research project. It is a practical university-industry partnership model designed to create useful outcomes for organizations while developing the next generation of business and technology talent.
Faculty-led, student-powered
xLab projects are guided by Weatherhead and CWRU faculty and carried out by selected student teams with relevant business, technical, research, design, and communication skills.
Students bring energy, curiosity, current training, and fresh perspective. Faculty bring experience, structure, judgment, continuity, and quality control.
Cross-disciplinary by design
Many transformation challenges do not fit neatly inside one discipline. xLab teams can combine management, strategy, design, computer science, data science, engineering, and other areas of expertise depending on the project need.
This cross-disciplinary model is especially valuable for projects involving digital innovation, AI, analytics, new product or service concepts, customer experience, operating models, or organizational transformation.
Built around real business value
xLab does not begin with a preferred solution or a technology agenda. We begin with the organization’s challenge, stakeholders, constraints, and goals.
Digital and AI technologies are often powerful parts of the solution space, and xLab has deep experience helping organizations explore and develop these opportunities. But the objective is not digital innovation for its own sake. The objective is to create practical value and help the organization make better decisions about what to do next.
More than deliverables
xLab projects produce tangible outputs: insights, recommendations, opportunity assessments, roadmaps, concepts, prototypes, proof-of-concept systems, and implementation pathways.

Rather than meeting candidates briefly at a career fair or interview, organizations can observe how students think, communicate, collaborate, learn, build, and execute. xLab projects have helped partners identify future interns and full-time hires while giving students valuable experience with real organizational challenges.

How projects take shape
Once we understand your challenge or opportunity, xLab leadership and faculty work with you to translate it into a scoped project.
That scoping process may include:
- defining the core problem or opportunity
- identifying stakeholders, users, or customers to understand
- clarifying business goals and constraints
- selecting the right project type(s)
- determining what evidence or exploration is needed
- defining deliverables and success criteria
- identifying the right student capabilities and faculty expertise
- choosing an appropriate timeline and engagement model
The result is a project structure designed to be useful, realistic, and actionable.
What to expect
Every xLab engagement is shaped around the partner’s goals, but most projects follow a common progression.
1. Start with a conversation
We begin by learning about your organization, the challenge or opportunity you are facing, and what you hope to accomplish.
2. Frame the challenge
xLab leadership and faculty help clarify the central questions, stakeholders, constraints, and potential project pathways.
3. Scope the project
Together, we define the project type, timeline, team needs, deliverables, working process, and success criteria.
4. Form the team
xLab identifies students with relevant skills, experience, and interests, supported by faculty with appropriate expertise.
5. Work through the project
The team conducts research, analysis, design, development, testing, or other project activities, with regular partner touchpoints along the way.
6. Deliver and decide next steps
Projects conclude with practical outputs and recommendations. Depending on the project, this may include an opportunity assessment, roadmap, design package, prototype, proof of concept, implementation plan, or recommendations for continued work.
Engagement models
xLab supports several ways of working with partner organizations.
Semester and summer projects
Many xLab projects are organized around fall, spring, or summer engagements. These projects typically involve a faculty-led student team working over a defined period with clear goals, milestones, client touchpoints, and deliverables.
This model is well suited for discovery, opportunity assessment, concept design, prototyping, proof-of-concept development, and other substantial project work.
Rapid-start projects
Some organizations need to move outside the traditional academic calendar. When timing, funding, or organizational urgency requires a faster start, xLab can support more flexible rapid-start engagements.
These projects may be shorter and more focused, or they may help prepare the ground for a larger semester or summer project.
Pre-work for larger engagements
In some cases, a focused initial effort can help clarify the opportunity, gather early insight, assess organizational readiness, or shape a stronger project brief before a full xLab team begins.
This can be especially useful when a company has a broad transformation question but needs help determining where to focus.
Follow-on support and improvement
For software, AI, analytics, or digital platform projects, the work often does not end with a prototype or proof of concept.
xLab can support follow-on work to maintain, refine, document, extend, or incrementally improve solutions after an initial project. This helps partners preserve momentum and continue learning after the first engagement concludes.
