Courtyard Cleveland University Circle

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-enabled digital service platforms has transformed the way we access and utilize services across various sectors, including finance and healthcare. However, these AI systems often rely on centralized data architectures that collect extensive amounts of personal data, raising significant concerns about privacy, ownership, and ethical use. The current ecosystem models often favor the concentration of value in the hands of a few powerful players, leaving individuals and smaller stakeholders at a disadvantage. This imbalance not only raises ethical concerns but also stifles innovation and hinders the equitable distribution of the benefits generated by AI.

Funded by NSF, a team of investigators from CWRU is researching a shift towards a Responsible AI-enabled Digital Service Ecosystem (RAIDSE) that encompasses three key elements: (1) a decentralized data architecture that empowers individuals and communities, (2) responsible AI models that are trained on ethically sourced and curated data, and (3) an ecosystem model that promotes fair value allocation and stakeholder participation. Our vision is to create a socio-technical foundation that supports the development and deployment of responsible AI and AI-enabled digital services.

The team is hosting an invitation-only workshop on Thursday, September 11 - Friday, September 12 in Cleveland, near the Case Western University campus. This workshop will bring together leaders from healthcare, academia, learning and employment records, cybersecurity, and finance to share their thoughts and experiences that will help shape this research moving forward.
