Americans began fighting over the Civil War’s meaning before the smoke cleared the battlefield. The United States won, but misinformation created a new battlefield over the memory of the Civil War with devastating consequences. Brigadier General Ty Seidule, U.S. Army (Retired) and Hinchcliff Professor of History at Hamilton College challenges the myths of the Confederate insurrection and explores why we continue to fight over the legacy of the Civil War.
Following Professor Seidule's talk, he will be in conversation with Emily Liebert, Lauren Rich Fine Curator of Contemporary Art and Chair of Art of the Americas and Modern and Contemporary Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art. They will discuss how public monuments shape national identity, historical memory, and current events.

About the speakers:
Ty Seidule served in the U.S. Army for more than three decades, retiring in 2020 as a brigadier general. He is a professor emeritus of history at West Point and received its distinguished faculty award.
In 2021, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin appointed Seidule to the Congressional Naming Commission tasked with redesignating Department of Defense assets which honor Confederates, where he was elected vice chair.
Seidule's most recent book is A Promise Delivered: Ten American Heroes and the Battle to Rename Our Nation’s Military Bases. His previous book Robert E. Lee and Me: A Southerner’s Reckoning with the Myth of the Lost Cause made NPR, Forbes and others best books of 2021 list. Seidule has written or edited five other books, four of which won writing prizes, and he created and co-edited the award-winning West Point History of Warfare, the largest enhanced digital book in any field. His short video, "Was the Civil War About Slavery" has 35 million views on social media.
Seidule serves as an International Security Fellow at New America and is also on the scholar advisory board for the Gilder Lehrman Institute for American History.
Emily Liebert is the Lauren Rich Fine Curator of Contemporary Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA), where she is also Chair of the Art of the Americas, Modern and Contemporary Art. After roles at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum, and the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas, Liebert joined the CMA in 2017. She has expanded the CMA’s contemporary program through numerous exhibitions, publications, and acquisitions. Current and recent projects include the traveling retrospective Martin Puryear: Nexus (cocurated with Reto Thüring); Shahzia Sikander: Collective Behavior (cocurated with Ainsley Cameron), a Collateral Event of the 2024 Venice Biennale; Emeka Ogboh: Ama, the Gathering Place (cocurated with Smooth Nzewi), the museum’s inaugural commission in its Ames Family Atrium; and The Gift: Emma Amos with Friends.
