Americans began fighting over the Civil War’s meaning before the smoke cleared the battlefield. The United States won, but misinformation created a new battlefield over the memory of the Civil War with devastating consequences. Brigadier General Ty Seidule, U.S. Army (Retired) and Hinchcliff Professor of History at Hamilton College challenges the myths of the Confederate insurrection and explores why we continue to fight over the legacy of the Civil War.
Following Professor Seidule's talk, he will be in conversation with Emily Liebert, Lauren Rich Fine Curator of Contemporary Art and Chair of Art of the Americas and Modern and Contemporary Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art. They will discuss how public monuments shape national identity, historical memory, and current events.
