Edra Soto's opening celebration for La Distancia marks the artist’s first major Midwest project outside of Chicago, as well as The Sculpture Center’s largest commission to date. La Distancia recognizes our thirst and desire for belonging and home by weaving together personal and collective stories of humanity to amplify community voices and celebrate the deep and growing roots of Cleveland’s Latinx community. The exhibition explores the relationship between our private, interior lives and shared public history and culture through the collection of stories and mementos, but also by changing the physical architecture of the landscape and unapologetically taking up space. La Distancia includes an immersive installation in The Sculpture Center’s gallery containing mementos of home contributed by Cuyahoga residents, a curated collection of self portraits by area Latinx artists, cultural performances and family-style feasts. A permanent artistically designed bus shelter by Edra Soto living in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood will serve as a monument reflecting our cultural memory.
Edra Soto La Distancia runs May 16 – July 19, 2025.
This event is sponsored by The Sculpture Center and is free and open to the public.
