This event features an immersive film experience on immigrants and foodways in America, followed by a reception featuring those foods. The virtual reality film Breaking Bread brings viewers into the homes of four refugee families in Cleveland as they share traditional meals and their stories of resettlement. The short film Fresh Start follows a collective of refugee and immigrant farmers in rural New Hampshire as they rebuild their lives through the New American Sustainable Agriculture Project. There will be a discussion after the films, followed by a reception, where guests can enjoy authentic Congolese dishes prepared by Furahi, a family- centered business founded in June 2020 by Esther Ngemba. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Esther and her family sought refuge in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2011. Through Furahi—which means "happiness" in Swahili—she shares her passion for Congolese culture and cuisine, bringing a taste of Africa to the community.
This event is sponsored by the School of Film and Media Arts and the Center for Refugee and Immigrant Success at Cleveland State University and the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities and is free and open to the public.
