Feedback in Foundations
Although we always welcome feedback during their first two years, we have formal survey periods when students give feedback on the blocks, the IQ faculty, and the teaching faculty involved.
Faculty evaluations (lecture, medium-sized groups, and IQ teams) are administered to the students twice per block; at the mid-block and end-of-block periods.
Additionally, IQ facilitators provide their students with feedback through formative and summative assessments which occur at mid-block and end-of-block (respectively). IQ facilitators are a unique group of faculty who maintain a close educational relationship with their students for a long period of time and develop the insights necessary to evaluate their students. Periodically, the students engage in self and peer feedback for their IQ team members as well as their FCM Seminar groups.
At the end of each block, an overall evaluation of the block and a survey of clinical immersion are administered. Some blocks choose to administer a mid-block survey during the mid-block period to get feedback on unique aspects of the curriculum that do not occur in the second half of the block. Longitudinal blocks (Blocks 7 & 8) are administered on each end of block evaluation for Blocks 1 through 6.
Feedback in Core Clinical Rotations
Basic Core rotations are either eight or 12 weeks in length (12-week cores include Core 1 of Family Medicine, Geriatrics and Internal Medicine and Core 2 of OB/Gyn and Pediatrics; eight week core include Core 3 of Neurology and Psychiatry and Core 4 of Emergency Medicine and Surgery). Rotation evaluations are administered at the end of each basic core and completion is required prior to grades being submitted to the registrar.
Faculty assessments are also administered at the end of each basic core rotation. Students are asked to assess a specified number of faculty members per rotation, including any faculty with whom the student spent a significant portion of time during the rotation. These faculty members include inpatient attendings, teaching attendings, and outpatient preceptors. Completion of these assessments is also required prior to grades being submitted to the Registrar.
