About

Welcome to Our Department

Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. Our team is committed to integrating patient care, teaching and research to prevent disease and promote the health of individuals, families and communities. Please explore our website to learn more about the depth and diversity of our department.

As a highly ranked department by U.S. News & World Report and by The National Institutes of Health, we take pride in educating a new generation of family physicians and providing stellar care to patients. Our research division explores emerging issues focused on improving care and clinician-patient communication.

But it is our work within the Cleveland community that provides our students and residents with a unique perspective on urban health. Our new Weatherhead Institute for Family Medicine and Community Health houses innovative programs and initiatives dedicated to improving the health of Northeast Ohioans through education, research, engagement and advocacy.

After all, we believe that everyone deserves an equal chance to live a healthy life. And, it's at the intersection of public health and primary care where true transformation and healing will take place.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to train family physicians with a passion for caring for patients where the need is greatest, through excellence in clinical care, advocacy, and understanding of population health. We are also committed as a department to being an innovator in research, improving primary health care delivery and preventive services.

Research Focus

The research focus of the department is on health services research broadly and in implementation science more specifically. Several department faculty members are leaders in research in cancer prevention and cardiovascular risk reduction. Our research focus is consistent with our broader department mission and is completely aligned with the challenges and opportunities family physicians face in the communities they serve.
