Julia Knopes, PhD

Julia Knopes PhD MA is a bioethicist and anthropologist who studies psychiatric disability in the United States. Her scholarship explores ethical issues in mental health recovery, and draws on both empirical and normative approaches to understand people's everyday experiences of living with serious mental health conditions. Dr. Knopes teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses in bioethics, psychiatric ethics, and disability studies. She has also completed qualitative and mixed-methods research on undergraduate medical education in the Midwest. Dr. Knopes holds a PhD in Anthropology from Case Western Reserve University, a MA in Humanities from the University of Chicago, and a BA summa cum laude in English from Washington and Jefferson College. She completed postdoctoral training in bioethics and medical humanities in the Department of Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University prior to joining as faculty.
