The faculty in Neurosciences have as their first priority the education of graduate, and medical students, and undergraduate students in the B.S. in Neuroscience major. The coursework is varied and reflects strengths in the department as well as current topics in Neuroscience.
The rich Neurosciences training environment provides several ways to broaden the awareness of postdoctoral scholars, students, and other trainees in the wide spectrum of modern basic and translational neuroscience research. These include a weekly Neurosciences journal club, a Neurosciences seminar series, workshops, retreats, attendance at national and international meetings and other research forums.
In the Neurosciences Department, we train students as well as other trainees to creatively design, execute, and interpret experiments using state of the art molecular, genetic, biophysical and systems neuroscience approaches with the goal of understanding how the nervous system develops, functions, and responds to injury or disease. Our trainees learn the power of applying multiple techniques to gather several lines of evidence in support of a testable hypothesis and how appropriate collaborations can facilitate this objective.
Equally important is to provide trainees with the experience of communicating their findings at scientific meetings and interacting with other scientists in their field of study.
Trainees in the Department of Neurosciences also have the opportunity to interact with world experts in aspects of the nervous system and brain health in a variety of excellent departments at CWRU and affiliated hospitals (University Hospitals of Cleveland, Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth), including the Departments of Neurology, Biomedical Engineering, Pathology, Genetics & Genome Sciences, Pharmacology, Physiology & Biophysics, Biology, and Psychiatry.
