Dr. Pieper is a board-certified psychiatrist and neuroscientist in the Department of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, and at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. He serves as an Investigator in the University Hospitals Harrington Discovery Institute, where he is director of the Center for Brain Health Medicines. Dr. Pieper also heads the Pieper Lab.
As the Rebecca E. Barchas, MD, DLFAPA, University Professor in Translational Psychiatry, and the University Hospitals Morley-Mather Chair of Neuropsychiatry, Dr. Pieper is dedicated to advancing the understanding of neurodegenerative disease and developing neuroprotective treatments. His work has demonstrated how resilience in the brain can be preserved to prevent neurodegenerative disease, and also restored to enable recovery from neurodegenerative conditions, such as injury and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Pieper’s many honors include the 2023 John S. Diekhoff Award for Graduate Mentoring. He is an elected member of the American College of Psychiatrists and the American Society for Clinical Investigation.
