The Multilingual Writing and Speaking Center is guided by a pedagogy that is proficiency-oriented, grammar-focused, accuracy-driven and communication-centered, specifically designed for second language learning at all levels. Because expressing complex ideas is challenging—even in one’s first language—we recognize that writing and speaking in world languages require instructional approaches that differ fundamentally from those used to support communication in a learner’s first language.

In second language contexts, effective communication depends not only on ideas, but also on a solid command of linguistic systems. For this reason, the center is committed to helping learners develop proficiency through a bottom-up approach that strengthens foundational language skills such as word choice, sentence structure, grammatical accuracy, and discourse coherence, alongside a top-down approach that supports idea development, organization and authorship. Together, these approaches ensure that students’ ideas are not only well formed, but also accurately, culturally and linguistically appropriate to the target language.
