Case Western Reserve University has named Amanda Bailey, a higher education human resources leader, its next vice president for human resources and its first chief human resources officer, President Eric W. Kaler announced today. Bailey will begin her role April 1.

Bailey comes to Case Western Reserve after serving as vice president for human resources at Boston University and Brown University. She most recently served as interim chief human resources officer at Oregon State University through WittKieffer’s Interim Executive Practice. Other roles have included associate vice president of HR and acting chief of staff at Morehouse College.

“Amanda’s breadth of experience, clear dedication to higher education and passion for advancing employees’ skills made her an ideal candidate,” President Kaler said. “I am eager to work closely with her to ensure Case Western Reserve remains a destination for top talent who will propel our university forward.”

Bailey said she’s been drawn to higher education for the opportunities it provides: offering students and employees the freedom of choice to advance their lives and those of their loved ones. But she was drawn to Case Western Reserve in particular after meeting so many experienced, collegial leaders—including those working in the Department of Human Resources and those who volunteer their time as part of the Staff Advisory Council.

“When I met leaders at CWRU, everyone had this quiet excellence about them that runs throughout the institution,” Bailey said. “But there was also a sense of humility and wanting to learn more—about wanting to work together and collaborate to put our best thinking forward.”

Among Bailey’s top priorities at Case Western Reserve are preparing staff and faculty for the future, and seeing how professional development and technology can reshape the role of human resources—allowing HR professionals’ time to be spent on their most meaningful contributions.

This is an area in which Bailey has significant experience, both at the universities she’s worked and through her leadership roles in organizations such as CNBC Workforce Executive Council, the College and University Professional Association for HR, American Research Universities’ HR Institute and Society for Higher Education HR Executives. Bailey is a regular guest on panel discussions and podcasts about workforce trends and the future of work and has been named to a variety of lists highlighting exceptional leaders.

“Throughout her career, Amanda has proven herself to be a transformative leader of universities’ human resources operations and a person dedicated to improving the culture of a campus,” said Brian Burnett, executive vice president and chief financial officer. “I look forward to seeing how she’ll positively shape the future of the workforce here at Case Western Reserve.”

Bailey succeeds Carolyn Gregory, who worked in Case Western Reserve’s Department of Human Resources for 30 years and served as vice president since 2007. With Bailey’s arrival next month, the Department of Human Resources will now be part of the Division of Finance, with Bailey reporting directly to Burnett.

Bailey earned a bachelor’s degree from Florida Atlantic University, a master’s degree in human resources management and labor relations from the University of Rhode Island, and has an additional professional certification in labor relations in education.
