Engineering student Hannah Chen selected for ASM International Cleveland Chapter’s Donaldson-Kiefer Scholarship
Hannah Chen, a second-year student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, was recently awarded a Donaldson-Kiefer Scholarship from the ASM International Cleveland Chapter.
Named after two notable alumni of this ASM chapter, this scholarship recognizes materials science students committed to advancing the field through impactful research and innovation.
“I am honored to have been selected as a recipient of the ASM International Cleveland Chapter’s Donaldson-Kiefer Scholarship,” said Chen, who joined the Gbur Group under Janet Gbur, PhD, this past semester.
Through the Gbur Group, Chen collaborated with h students from materials science and engineering, biomedical engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, and physics (Oberlin College and Conservatory), to optimize aerosol jet printed flexible circuits.
Through the quantitative and qualitative analysis of more than 700 circuit prints, Chen gained hands-on experience with optical microscopy and profilometry while contributing to research aimed at improving the consistency and precision of aerosol jet printing technology. Outside the lab setting, she also created a poster and presented the project’s findings at Intersections.
“Altogether, my experience with the Gbur group has given me a holistic understanding of research, both through hands-on skills in the lab, while also emphasizing the importance of effective communication through presentation opportunities,” Chen said.
