Mandel School’s Jessica Wojtalik explores cognitive therapy for early-course schizophrenia
Jessica Wojtalik, PhD, assistant professor at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, recently wrote an online article, titled “Effect of cognitive enhancement therapy for early course schizophrenia on gray matter volume: A confirmatory multisite randomized clinical trial.”
Published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, the article featured insight from Wilson Brown, PhD, assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University’s Department of Psychological Sciences, and colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh.
Article highlights include how:
- Cognitive Enhancement Therapy (CET) is an 18-month cognitive remediation intervention;
- CET has established benefits for cognition in early-course schizophrenia;
- CET may protect against gray matter loss associated with cognitive improvement;
- A neuroprotective effect of CET was not recapitulated in this study; and
- Continued investigation with other neuroimaging modalities is needed.
