Your journey to Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is an exciting experience. The Office of International Student Resources and Engagement (OISRE) would like to help you make your arrival as smooth as possible. The following are some things to keep in mind as you prepare to travel to CWRU.
Carry-on Baggage
As you prepare to travel to Cleveland, Ohio, we suggest packing some extra items in your carry-on.
Must put in carry-on:
- I-20
- Passport
- Anything with a lithium-ion battery (cell phones, laptops, etc.)
- Evidence of financial resources
- Contact info for your Designated School Official (DSO) at CWRU
Highly recommended items to put in your carry-on:
- U.S. dollars to use at the airport
- An extra outfit or two
- Prescription medication (it is best to have them in the prescription bottles or packages.)
- Valuables, electronics (e.g. jewelry, cameras, etc.)
- Phone and laptop chargers
- At least one U.S. plug adapter
- A change of shoes
- Slippers or whatever you plan to wear indoors
- Shower shoes (usually flip-flops)
- Travel-sized toiletries (e.g. toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, etc.)
- January arrivals: Outside temperatures may be around 0°C. Be sure to bring the following:
- Winter coat
- Warm, water-proof shoes or boots
- Wool socks
- Scarf, hat, and gloves
Security Guidelines for Packing
The level of airport security for flights coming to the U.S. may be quite different than that of your home country. Be mindful of the following guidelines to ensure you are complying with the requirements set by the U.S. government. These links will provide you with specific information:

Staying Safe While Traveling
Here are some ways to keep yourself and your items safe upon arrival:
- Consider a TSA-approved luggage lock.
- Do not leave your bags unattended at any time.
- Consider leaving your earbuds out and be aware of your surroundings, especially at night if you are using public transport or walking.
VISA Office
The VISA Office at Case Western Reserve University is a separate office that assists schools and departments with student and employment visa options for international students, scholars, visitors, and employees, which will permit the greatest benefit and flexibility to CWRU and to the individual. The office works with federal and state government agencies to obtain appropriate visa documentation for admission to the U.S., authorization for education and employment, and maintenance of legal status for our international population.
