Posse Mentors

The Posse Mentor plays a critical role in the success of the Posse Program. Mentors guide, inspire, and support a cohort of Posse Scholars through their college careers, motivating them to excel, overcome challenges, and cross the stage at graduation.

Posse Mentors act as key advisors and advocates throughout a cohort’s first two years of college. The core goal of a mentor is to help Scholars navigate campus life, achieve academic excellence, and stay on track toward graduation.

  • Weekly two-hour group meetings to foster community, facilitate open discussion, and build strong interpersonal connections.
  • Bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with each Scholar to monitor academic progress, discuss personal well-being, and navigate campus life.
  • Connect Scholars with campus resources for academic advising, student health, career development, and other individual needs.
  • Help Scholars find meaningful ways to engage with the broader campus community and develop leadership skills.
  • Maintain open communication lines with program staff and campus liaisons through weekly Posse staff meetings and periodic on-campus visits
  • Active participation in Posse events, including semesterly Big Meetings, annual multi-day PossePlus Retreat, and graduation celebration at degree completion.

Time Commitment: Approximately 15 hours per week, and being accessible when Scholars require additional support. Mentors receive compensation for their efforts.

Selected mentors attend three mandatory training sessions in the summer prior to the cohort's freshman year. These typically take place in June/July and require travel; all travel costs will be covered by the University.

  • National Mentor Training: A 3-day training held at Posse headquarters in New York City.
  • Local Mentor Training: A 3-day session located at the local site.
  • Summer Retreat: A three-day retreat with the Posse Scholars and Posse staff.

Mentors also attend the Local Mentor Training in the summer prior to the cohort's sophomore year.
