Proficiency Exams

Proficiency examinations allow students to receive credit for a Case Western Reserve University course by passing an examination for that course.

Students should think critically before registering for and taking a proficiency exam. Exams are optional and intended for students that have completed self-study of the material but have not had the opportunity take AP or IB examinations to earn credit or students that did not earn transfer credit for the course. Beyond receiving course credit, students should ensure they are adequately prepared with the content knowledge for success in the next-level course.

For students passing proficiency exams, credit will be indicated on the transcript by the symbols PR. No letter grade is given and proficiency credit does not count towards GPA calculations.
