CHSL to Host Two PubMed Workshops!

This September, Cleveland Health Sciences Library will be hosting workshops on PubMed including “Painless PubMed,” and “Advanced PubMed.” These sessions are free and open to all CWRU health sciences students, faculty, staff, and hospital affiliates. Title: Painless PubMed

Description: Join us for a one-hour session designed to quickly introduce you to searching in the PubMed database. Upon completing this class, you should be able to:  

• Describe when you should use PubMed and how to access it;  

• Describe the basic back-end function of PubMed and how you can leverage understanding of it to improve your experience; 

• Tailor your PubMed search query to get more relevant results;  

• Broaden or narrow a search in PubMed;  

• Navigate search results in PubMed; and save and share searches and search results in PubMed.  

Feel free to bring your lunch. If possible, please bring a laptop. No experience required. Open to all CWRU students, staff, faculty, and hospital affiliates. Title: Advanced PubMed

Description:  

Are you familiar with PubMed but want to be able to use its advanced features? Level up with Advanced PubMed! Upon completing this session, you should be able to:  

• Structure and build more complex searches, including 3 & 4 concept clusters per search​ 

• Define your search question as an answerable question using the PICO question format​ 

• Describe the record structure undergirding PubMed, including MEDLINE records​ 

• Utilize MeSH terms 

• Incorporate more advanced nested Boolean searches 

• Utilize the Boolean operator "NOT" in searches​ 

• Determine other potential databases to search in addition to PubMed based on your topic​ 

• Utilize PubMed’s error notification system.  

Prerequisites: Advanced PubMed has been designed as an additional step in the learning process for intermediate PubMed users. Note that if you have just completed our Painless PubMed class, you will likely need to practice using PubMed to develop fluency in the basics before arriving at the level at which you will be able to follow Advanced PubMed. Not sure if you’re ready for Advanced PubMed? Try the following exercise:  

You are ready to take Advanced PubMed if you can perform these tasks without referencing guides: Run an author search; how many citations do you get? Set up a MyNCBI account and save a collection. Run a search on two concepts (fever in sore throat) using MeSH terms. Limit your search to English language results. Email the results of this search to yourself.

The AAMC Faculty Salary Report

The print version of the AAMC Faculty Salary Report was discontinued starting with the FY 2022 report. As the academic medicine community transitions to an increasingly digital environment, the AAMC is continuing to evolve our products with our community. The online version of the AAMC Faculty Salary Report offers benefits, including:

 Three years of compensation data

• Ability to access data from any device with internet access

• Ability to view, download, and print each table

• Detailed data breakouts (such as compensation by gender and race/ethnicity)

 Consistent with previous releases of the online report, the FY 2023 AAMC Faculty Salary Report (Online) is intended for individual purchase. There is not currently an option to purchase institutional or proxy access to the AAMC Faculty Salary Report (Online) publication.

 Faculty and staff at AAMC member institutions are eligible to receive AAMC member pricing for the online publication. Additionally, residents/fellows are eligible to purchase the publication at AAMC member pricing. For reference, the FY 2023 AAMC Faculty Salary Report (Online) is available to faculty and staff at AAMC member institutions, along with medical residents and fellows, for an annual subscription fee of $60 at https://store.aamc.org/aamc-faculty-salary-report-fy-2023-online.html.
