ARAB SOCIAL CLUB

The ARAB SOCIAL CLUB, formed in the late 1970s, is described as "a local center for pro-Palestinian Arab-Americans." It served as a social political center on Palestinian affairs, providing members access to Palestinian newspapers and magazines and video cassettes of speeches. Occasionally the club expressed its political views publicly, as in a telegram to Pres. Jimmy Carter in March 1980 protesting Israel's establishment of a settlement in the Beit Hanina section of Jerusalem. In the cultural area, the Arab Social Club sponsored classes in Arabic and Palestinian history and culture for children. In 1986 it moved from a converted storefront at 10313 Lorain to 7412 Lawn Ave. near Madison and W. 73rd. The club closed in 1992.
