SCENE

SCENE is a weekly newspaper that has covered Cleveland's entertainment beat for a quarter-century. Founded by Richard J. Kabat, a former trucking company executive and journalism student at JOHN CARROLL UNIV., it made its first appearance as The Cleveland Scene on 1 July 1970. Many of its early staff, including editor John Richmond, were recruited from Cleveland After Dark, a similar venture that had folded several weeks earlier. Before the end of its first year, the Scene had dropped the word "Cleveland" from its nameplate and focused its coverage around the local ROCK 'N' ROLL milieu. It published supplements on "A History of Cleveland Rock 'n' Roll" in 1981-82 and ran exclusive interviews by longtime editor Mark Holan with former Beatle George Harrison and Beatle producer George Martin. Staff members have included Anastasia Pantsios, Scott Eyman, Carmie Amato, Dave Thomas, Keith Rathbun, and Joyce Halasa. Headquartered in PLAYHOUSE SQUARE, the tabloid claimed a free circulation in 1995 of 56,000.
