TRACY, JANE ALLYN FOOTE (8 Nov. 1857-5 Aug. 1944) founded and served as a trustee for educational, medical, and arts organizations in Cleveland and elsewhere. Born in Detroit, MI, to Phoebe Dwight and George Foote, she moved to Cleveland with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George A. Stanley, and attended the CLEVELAND FEMALE SEMINARY. Tracy married James J. Tracy 25 April 1883; they lived at 309 Euclid Ave., later the site of the Sterling & Welch Co., and on Harcourt Dr.
Tracy served as one of the original members of the advisory committee of the College for Women, West. Reserve Univ. (1890), helped found the CLEVELAND DAY NURSERY AND FREE KINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATION (1894), and served as trustee of the Cleveland School of Art. She travelled extensively, including an around-the-world venture in 1911, and wrote and lectured on her experiences. Tracy became a Life Member of the CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ART in 1919 and a Fellow for Life in 1923.
Tracy summered in New London, NH after 1890. There she served as the founding president of the New London Hospital and donated a community library, the Tracy Memorial Library (opened in 1926), in her husband's memory. Tracy died at her SHAKER HGTS. home and was buried in LAKE VIEW CEMETERY. She was survived by two children, James Jared and Catherine Tracy Wallace, 10 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
