Faculty and Staff Awards

It can be easy to get caught in the day-to-day hustle of your job—but we’re committed to ensuring your efforts don’t go unnoticed. Learn about some of the awards Case Western Reserve University faculty and staff may receive in their work at Case School of Engineering.

All awards are presented annually at the school’s spring awards banquet in April following a school-wide nomination process.

Faculty Awards

Undergraduate Teaching Award

The Undergraduate Teaching Award recognizes excellence in undergraduate education at Case School of Engineering by highlighting the efforts of faculty who have demonstrated exemplary teaching and or advising in undergraduate research. This award recognizes those faculty whose accomplishments as a teacher or undergraduate research advisor go beyond the standard expectation.  

Particular emphasis is placed on recognizing faculty who have successfully developed and implemented a new and innovative course or curriculum; significantly revised and updated an old or existing course or curriculum; successfully engaged undergraduate students in cutting-edge research; or successfully employed new pedagogical techniques.

Graduate Teaching Award

The Case School of Engineering Graduate Teaching Award recognizes excellence in graduate-level education at Case School of Engineering by highlighting the efforts of faculty who have demonstrated exemplary teaching. While all faculty are expected to be effective teachers, this award recognizes those faculty whose accomplishments as a teacher go beyond the standard expectation. 

Particular emphasis is placed on recognizing faculty who have successfully developed and implemented a new and innovative course or curriculum, ideally based on cutting-edge research programs; significantly revised and updated an existing course or curriculum; or successfully employed new pedagogical techniques.

Research Award

The Research Award recognizes excellence in research by highlighting the efforts of faculty who have demonstrated exemplary research activities. Particular emphasis is placed on recognizing a faculty member who has initiated multidisciplinary research efforts. 

Other criteria for selection are research activities that had a large impact in the community, region, state, nation and/or the world; research activities that have raised the level of Case School of Engineering’s visibility on the national and international arena; and/or research activities had an impact on the educational mission of the school.

Staff Awards

Staff Leadership Award

The Staff Leadership Award is a mechanism for recognizing staff who go above and beyond the call of duty to develop innovative, helpful, and timesaving ideas or programs that benefit the school and the university. Nominations should specifically address how the individual has gone above and beyond the call of duty; what innovative, helpful, and time saving ideas or programs the staff member has instituted; and how those ideas or programs have benefited the department/school.

School-wide Awards

International Activity Recognition Award

The International Activity Recognition Award recognizes excellence in efforts of faculty and/or staff who have promoted Case School of Engineering’s international visibility as well as initiating collaborations with academic institutions abroad. Particular emphasis will be placed on recognizing faculty and/or staff who have successfully promoted international relationships for the greater good of the school; which has significantly benefited more than one person, and has increased the reputation and visibility of the school.

Innovation Award

The Case School of Engineering Innovation Award recognizes engineering faculty-led teams, including students, postdocs, and staff, who have made significant advances in translating university research into innovations with significant benefit to society.

Eligible team leaders include regular faculty as well as research and non-tenure track faculty. Awards will be based on evidence of progress to commercialization (patents, licenses, startup investment and other forms of follow-on funding) as well as benefit to society.

Esprit de Corps Awards

The Esprit de Corps Award is a mechanism for staff to recognize faculty, and for faculty to recognize staff who exhibit pride, spirit, enthusiasm and unity of purpose in moving Case School of Engineering forward.  Nominations for this award might be made for individuals who:

  • Improve the quality of life at Case School of Engineering
  • Help others in a particularly kind and understanding  manner
  • Enhance the student experience 
  • Improve the morale of coworkers
  • Exhibit consistent positive energy

Diversity and Inclusion Award

The Diversity and Inclusion Award recognizes faculty and/or staff who embrace diversity at Case School of Engineering. Nominations should reflect the way a nominee has championed diversity and inclusion through programs, activities and efforts that are designed to promote and support cultural, ethnic, racial, class, gender, sexual orientation, language and other human differences in people and society.

Nominations for this award might be made for individuals who promote awareness of diversity, inclusion and equity specifically in:

  • Recruitment and retention of faculty and/or staff
  • School, department or campus climate
  • Research
  • Community outreach
  • Educational or multicultural opportunities
  • Student experience
