Case Western Reserve University is committed to supporting safe, compliant, and well-coordinated international travel for all members of our community. Whether you are traveling abroad for research, teaching, conferences, service, or study, it is important to follow university policies and approval processes before departure. This page provides guidance and requirements for employees and students undertaking university-related international travel, as well as important information regarding travel to countries designated under ITAR regulations.
Case Western Reserve University community members are required to report their travel in advance of university-related international travel. Learn more in the International Travel Risk Management Policy. International travel reporting fulfills federal compliance obligations, enables alerts when travel is to countries with limited university insurance coverage, and enhances the university's ability to publicize our global impact and foster connections to expand that impact.
If your travel destination includes one or more ITAR-designated countries, registration for personal travel is required to enhance safety and/or to reduce security and compliance issues. Please note that registration for personal travel to ITAR-designated countries will not be evaluated for permission to travel, as we do not generally assess strictly personal travel. For the current list of ITAR-designated countries, please visit the ITAR Country List.
We know that international travel is a valuable part of your work and we want to make it as easy as possible for you to travel. We will strive to allow such travel to the maximum extent possible. However, we reserve the right to disallow CWRU-related travel if there are significant risks to personal safety, government regulations, and/or national security concerns. Decisions will be guided by a committee of university leaders from across administrative units.
CWRU policy requires that all employees (faculty, staff and postdocs) report their work-related international travel. All work-related international travel must be reported prior to departure. Each traveler must submit the form separately, even if multiple individuals are traveling together on the same itinerary.
All Case Western Reserve students (undergraduate and graduate) participating in academic travel must register through the Office of Education Abroad. Examples of academic travel include: international travel for a conference, internship/externship, research opportunity, co-curricular travel on behalf of a CWRU organization, etc.
