The Capstone: Transition to Residency course is a required, two-week culminating experience for graduating medical students at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. This course is designed to bridge the gap between undergraduate medical education and the first day of residency by providing intensive, hands-on preparation for real-world clinical responsibilities.
Students participate in simulation-based training, small-group workshops, and interactive sessions focused on high-stakes scenarios such as managing critically ill patients, responding to pages, performing basic procedures, leading interdisciplinary teams, and navigating end-of-life care. Additionally, students are exposed to expectations related to their new roles as resident teachers. The curriculum emphasizes professional readiness, systems-based practice, and critical decision-making.
By the end of the course, students complete an individualized learning plan highlighting opportunities for knowledge or skill development based on their self-assessment during the course. Full participation is required to graduate.
