National Institutes of Health

The National Institutes of Health contains a variety of programs related to tuberculosis research. Most programs lie within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases [NIAID]. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute also supports tuberculosis research. Within the NIAID, there are two divisions supporting tuberculosis research. These are the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and the Division of AIDS.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC]

The National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention, Division of Tuberculosis Elimination works with state and local health agencies to prevent and control tuberculosis. This is the primary site for US Center for Disease Control and Prevention information on tuberculosis. Included are links for news, updates, reports, guidelines, and educational materials for health professionals.

Tuberculosis Trials Consortium [TBTC]

The TBTC is a collaboration of North American and international clinical investigators whose mission is to conduct programmatically relevant research concerning the diagnosis, clinical management, and prevention of tuberculosis (TB) infection and disease.

Global Tuberculosis Report - A World Health Organization Publication

A comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the TB epidemic and progress in implementing and financing TB prevention, care and control at global, regional and country levels using data reported by almost 200 countries that account for over 99% of the world's TB cases. Having been completed two years before the deadline for achievement of global TB targets, the report includes a special supplement that assesses progress towards the targets and the actions needed to accelerate towards or move beyond them. World Health Organization [WHO]

The World Health Organization (WHO) site provides access links to global TB treatment and control statistics, reports, treatment guidelines, and literature on TB. Country-specific information is available for most of the world. Much of the information is directed toward the global control of tuberculosis with a focus on those areas where most cases of active tuberculosis are located including sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian subcontinent.

The International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease

The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease [The Union] is a non-profit, non-governmental organization with members throughout the world. It is dedicated to the prevention and control of tuberculosis and lung disease.

There are two divisions within The Union with a focus on TB.

  • The Tuberculosis Division

    • The Tuberculosis Division contains information for the health professional and researchers on the clinical, bacteriological, epidemiology, and control of TB , featuring slides and accessible full-length IUATLD publications.
  • The TB-HIV Division

    • The TB-HIV Division found under "Lung Health" and contains some statistics on this topic as well as information on related meetings, symposia, and courses.

Stop TB

Stop TB is a global movement of more than 400 groups organized to accelerate social and political action to stop the unnecessary spread of tuberculosis around the world. The site describes the activities of several working groups dedicated to the development and use of new diagnostics, drugs, and vaccines to control tuberculosis. Activities of other working groups focused on DOTS implementation and other social actions are also included.

The Global Drug Facility

The Global Drug Facility site includes information on the Global Drug Facility that is a mechanism to expand access to, and availability of, high-quality TB drugs to facilitate global DOTS Expansion

American Lung Association

The American Lung Association (ALA) was founded in 1904 to combat tuberculosis. Today this organization fights all forms of lung ailments with special emphasis on asthma, tobacco control, and environmental health. The ALA has worked to increase federal funding for tuberculosis research and control.

American Thoracic Society

The American Thoracic Society [ATS] is an independently incorporated, international, educational and scientific society which focuses on respiratory and critical care medicine. ATS was once called the American Sanatorium Association. It maintains a focus on medical aspects of tuberculosis, whereas the parent organization, American Lung Association, concentrates on public health issues. A large number of information links on tuberculosis at this site can be identified after using the "search" button. Literally, thousands of items related to tuberculosis are available at this site. For example, search refinement to a topic such as "tuberculosis diagnosis" provides access to several hundred items including full-text journal articles.

Infectious Diseases Society of America

The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) is a medical society representing more than 5,500 physicians and scientists devoted to patient care, education, research, and community health planning in the area of infectious diseases. IDSA members care for many of the patients with tuberculosis (TB) in the United States. This site summarizes ISDA guidelines related to tuberculosis. This information is primarily intended for health professionals.

International AIDS Vaccine Initiative

The IAVI is a nonprofit scientific research organization dedicated to addressing urgent, unmet global health challenges including HIV and tuberculosis. Our mission is to translate scientific discoveries into affordable, globally accessible public health solutions.

Through scientific and clinical research in Africa, India, Europe, and the U.S., IAVI is pioneering the development of biomedical innovations designed for broad global access. Tuberculist

The Tuberculist's purpose is to collate and integrate various aspects of the genomic information from M. africanum, M. bovis, M. bovis BCG, M. canetti, M. microti, and above all, M. tuberculosis. TubercuList provides a complete dataset of DNA and protein sequences derived from the paradigm strain M. tuberculosis H37Rv, linked to the relevant annotations and functional assignments. It allows one to easily browse through this data and retrieve information, using various criteria (gene names, location, keywords, etc.).

TB Vaccine Testing and Research Materials

For over ten years, the Mycobacteria Research Laboratories (MRL) at Colorado State University has been funded through the National Institutes of Health Contracts to provide the research community with materials and reagents to facilitate basic, translational and applied research focused on the control and eradication of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Combined with these reagent provision activities has been the development of animal models and testing of candidate vaccines against tuberculosis.

Curry International Tuberculosis Center

The Curry International Tuberculosis Center (CNTC) creates, enhances and disseminates state-of-the-art resources and models of excellence to control and eliminate tuberculosis. Committed to the belief that everyone deserves the highest quality of care in a manner consistent with his or her culture, values and language, we develop and deliver highly versatile, culturally appropriate training, educational products, and technical assistance. CNTC is designated as a Regional Tuberculosis Training and Medical Consultation Center (RTMCC) via a funded cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This site provides information, including training workshops and online courses primarily designed to assist physicians, public health personnel, and other health-care providers in the diagnosis, treatment, and control of tuberculosis in the US.

Charles P. Felton National Tuberculosis Center at Harlem Hospital

The Charles P. Felton National Tuberculosis Center at Harlem Hospital is one of three "model centers" funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As a "model center," our mandate is to contribute to the elimination of tuberculosis (TB) as a public health problem by creating and distributing training and education products for the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of TB and latent TB infection, and by developing and testing innovative programs. TB Alert - Stop Tuberculosis Worldwide

TB Alert is a British charity, registered in late 1998 and launched at the Houses of Parliament on World TB Day (24th March) 1999. TB Alert is the first TB-specific charity in Britain since the 1960s when earlier organizations, assuming too soon that the disease had been vanquished, faded away or moved on to other interests. It operates almost entirely on the time and energy of volunteers. The site provides information on TB in Britain, Frequently Asked Questions, and projects where they are involved.
