The Decker Aerospace Lab periodically engages student volunteers to support our ongoing research. Because our research needs change rapidly based on project timelines, funding, and data collection schedules, we are not always actively recruiting volunteers.
This page serves as a dynamic space where we post current volunteer opportunities as they arise.
When volunteer positions are available, students may assist with a variety of research-related activities, including:
- Supporting participant testing and data collection
- Assisting with data entry, coding, and preliminary analysis
- Maintaining organized and professional research spaces
- Contributing to posters, presentations, and manuscripts
- Participating in lab meetings and training sessions
Specific responsibilities depend on current projects and the volunteer’s background and interests.
Student volunteers are expected to approach their role as a professional commitment. Typical expectations include:
- A minimum commitment of 4–8 hours per week for at least two semesters (unless otherwise arranged)
- A consistent, pre-approved schedule
- Attendance at lab meetings and scheduled participant sessions
- Professional conduct, punctuality, and clear communication
All volunteers must adhere to lab policies regarding professionalism, data integrity, ethical research conduct, and respectful use of shared research spaces.
The Decker Aerospace Lab is committed to mentorship and professional development. Volunteers receive hands-on exposure to both basic and applied research methods and are encouraged to engage with the scientific process, ask questions, and seek feedback.
Students who demonstrate reliability, initiative, and strong engagement may be considered for expanded responsibilities or future paid or credit-based roles, when available.
All student volunteers are required to review and sign a Lab Expectations and Agreement document prior to beginning work. This document outlines mutual expectations related to time commitment, conduct, communication, and research responsibilities. A copy of this document is available below.

If you have questions about student volunteering or the interest form, please contact a member of the lab team at aerophysteam@case.edu. We appreciate your interest in our work and look forward to connecting when opportunities arise.
Expressing Interest
If we are not currently recruiting, students who are interested in future opportunities are encouraged to complete our Student Volunteer Interest Form. This form allows you to share your background, interests, and availability so we may contact you if a suitable opportunity becomes available. Submitting the form does not guarantee placement, but it ensures that your information is on file for future consideration.
