Aerospace Lab Team
Why We Do It

At the Decker Aerospace Lab, we are driven by the reality that human performance failures in extreme and operational environments can have catastrophic consequences. Our mission is to understand the biological limits of cognition and physiology under stress, so we can inform safer systems, smarter training, and more resilient operators where the margin for error is smallest.

How We Do It

We bridge foundational science and real‑world aerospace operations by integrating laboratory‑based neuroscience and physiology with field research and operational partnerships.  Using advanced neuroimaging, physiological monitoring, and controlled manipulation of oxygen and environmental stressors, our work is guided by questions that emerge directly from aviators, clinicians, and aerospace professionals.

What We Do

The Decker Aerospace Lab investigates how the human brain and body respond to extreme and operationally demanding environments.  Our research spans neuroimaging, high‑altitude physiology, and sleep and fatigue science, with a focus on oxygen stress, cognitive vulnerability, and the limits of human performance in aerospace and high‑risk settings.

The Decker Aerospace Lab is dedicated to advancing the understanding of human physiology in extreme and operational environments, with a particular focus on aerospace and applied human performance.  Our work integrates principles of physiology, engineering, and translational research to investigate how the human body responds to stressors such as hypoxia, altitude, acceleration, and altered oxygen delivery.  By combining laboratory-based experimentation with real-world applications, we aim to generate insights that improve safety, performance, and resilience in aviation and other high-demand settings.

Located within Case Western Reserve University, the lab serves as a collaborative and educational hub for students, trainees, and researchers interested in aerospace physiology and human performance science.  We are committed to hands-on training, mentorship, and the development of future scientists and clinicians through immersive research experiences.  Through partnerships with academic, clinical, and operational communities, the Decker Aerospace Lab strives to translate scientific discovery into meaningful advancements that benefit both specialized populations, such as pilots, and broader human health.
