How We Began

Double alumnus and craigslist founder Craig Newmark supports new Women in Tech Initiative at Case Western Reserve University

In 2018, Case Western Reserve University double alumnus and craigslist founder Craig Newmark (CIT ‘75, GRS ‘77, computer science) pledged to help launch a new Women in Tech initiative at his alma mater with a $100,000 gift. With a concentration on computer science, this program will provide resources and networking opportunities to female students embarking on careers in science and technology.

Newmark’s gift will be used to bolster programs that support women in science and technology, including creating a national network to connect women studying technology and those working in the field.

“The Women in Tech initiative, spearheaded at Case Western Reserve University, will focus on bringing college and professional women together using an innovative platform that highlights their accomplishments, addresses concerns about the industry, and helps women better connect within the tech world. We are thrilled that Craig Newmark Philanthropies is supporting this exciting effort.”

-Alexis Abramson, Interim Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

“Women and girls need opportunities to build and demonstrate their science and tech skills, and this starts with equitable education,” says Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist and Craig Newmark Philanthropies.

Newmark has been a vocal advocate for the advancement of women in technology and ensuring that women have equal opportunities in the field. He has provided previous support for students in the Case School of Engineering to attend international conferences, including the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing and the Society of Women in Engineering’s WE17, events that give students opportunities to connect with their colleagues across the country to celebrate and connect women in technological fields.
