Common Reading Resources

The Common Reading program is designed to help new students make a successful transition from high school to CWRU life. All new students receive a copy of the book the summer prior to their arrival to campus, and have the opportunity to meet the author at the university's Fall Convocation.

For Academic Year 2025-26, the common reading selection is Against Technoableism: Rethinking Who Needs Improvement, by Ashley Shew (Associate Professor of Science, Technology, and Society at Virginia Tech).

The common reading selection is the subject of the University's Fall Convocation activities, and it often plays a role in the Writing Program's first-year Academic Inquiry seminars. The Writing Resource Center is always available to talk with students about critical reading, writing, and thinking - we look forward to discussing this text with you!
