First CWRU is a student organization that was founded in the fall of 2018 to advocate for first-generation college students by working on increased visibility of first-generation college students on campus, developing opportunities for professional development, bringing awareness to existing resources, as well as working to create new ones, and building community among first-generation students.
Being a first-generation college student can make it difficult for many students financially and mentally, and can be an isolating experience. First CWRU exists to help alleviate these negative experiences and to provide a network of support. First CWRU is a great place to get involved and meet people who understand the unique experiences of being first-generation. Having people who understand the experience helps make CWRU feel like a home.
In a typical semester we hold general body meetings twice a month to socialize in a way designed for members to continue to get to know each other and take a fun break from school work. Throughout the semester we host workshops that cover topics in professional development, such as resume-writing workshops, and post-graduate planning workshops, covering the do’s and don’ts of applying to grad school.
Each semester there is an opportunity to get off campus free of charge, where the general body goes out and does something in the Greater Cleveland area. In the past, we have gone to places such as Table-Top Cafe and the Westside Market.
Fundraising for our First-Gen Scholars Scholarship is a priority each semester. The scholarship is awarded to a first-generation college student who is a member of First CWRU and indicates financial need. Fundraising in the past has included a variety of activities from tie-dye events to bake sales.
