More about Gloria Neilson
Where are you from?
Grayling, Michigan
What academic program are you enrolled in?
J.D. with a focus in National Security Law and M.A. in Military Ethics
Why did you choose to study this subject?
Throughout undergrad, I was interested in conflict politics. In the past, I focused on the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 but was fascinated with all aspects of conflicts. When this MA was announced, I knew that I could take these interests and apply it to a new subject that I had never encountered before.
What is your favorite class and/or faculty member, and why?
I really enjoy the international criminal law class because it’s very relevant right now so class has been focused on discussing the latest international news and possible outcomes in international law.
Why did you choose CWRU?
I went here for undergrad and loved the city and the academic opportunities. I stayed for the chance to apply to the Military Ethics program after seeing it announced during my 4th year of undergrad. The law school told me to pursue it after my 1L year, so I applied to the MA program and was glad I stayed to pursue this unique path.
What do you like best about CWRU?
The people I have met and the opportunities that CWRU has given me especially during my graduate career.
What do you like best about living in Cleveland?
I love going downtown or to the different neighborhoods to try new food and events with my friends. It’s so easy to take a train to Ohio City and meet up to go to a trivia night or just grab a bite to eat.
Describe any research projects, study abroad, internship or other unique experiences and opportunities you have had as a result of being a CWRU student.
Because of CWRU, I was able to apply and work as an intern with the Coast Guard and Navy JAG offices and learn more about the “military” part of military ethics.
What extracurricular activities are you involved in?
Deputy Director of Operations, Yemen Accountability Project
International Criminal Moot Court
War Crime Prosecution Watch
What are some of your other interests and hobbies?
I really like going concerts, competing in music trivia, painting, or crocheting during the little free time I have.
What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment so far?
The research I have completed for my law school note on urban warfare. It was a fantastic opportunity to combine all my interests and I am proud of the work product I’ve produced.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In 5 years, I would like to be commissioned with a branch of the JAGC or continuing to be involved with the Military Ethics community.
