GUARINO'S is Cleveland's oldest restaurant. It opened in 1918 on Mayfield Road in LITTLE ITALY. The restaurant is named after its original owner, Vincenzo Guarino, who emigrated to Cleveland from Sicily in 1898.
The HOTZ CAFE, founded in 1919, is Cleveland's oldest bar. Located on the corner of Starkweather Avenue and West 10th Street in the TREMONT neighborhood, the bar was founded by John Hotz Sr.
MCGARRY, LAWRENCE J. “LARRY” (February 25, 1944-October 2, 2022) was a businessman in the painting industry who was involved in his heritage community. He was born to Michael McGarry and Catherine O’Mara as the eighth of nine children. His father was an immigrant from County Roscommon, Ireland, who founded the family painting business in 1946.
VAUDEVILLE was for many years the major entertainment business in Cleveland. It was essentially, "variety theater" and it was the dominant form of entertainment in the nation before cinema, radio, and television. In 1900 there were more than 2,000 vaudeville houses in the US. The industry employed tens of thousands of performers, and the only events people attended more frequently were school and church.
