The results of Mortimer et al. (1980) indicate that imbalanced
biphasic stimuli can be tissue safe at higher and can
avoid damage to the electrode.
Anodic and Cathodic Charge.
Figure plots charge densities in relation to electrode corrosion
and tissue damage.
Oblique lines plot the degree of charge imbalance. The left-most
one with no imbalance, with progressive increase in cathodic
charge, moving to the right. These data indicate that the
damaged area was significantly greater than control values.
Lipid Peroxidation.
Postulated mechanisms for damage by free radicals are shown
in the Figure.
