MS in Aerospace Physiology

Interested in how flight, space travel and other extreme environments affect human physiology and performance? In the Master of Science in Aerospace Physiology (MSAP) program, you will develop your foundational understanding of how the human body can withstand the challenges of both the aviation environment and outer space.

Housed within the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, this 30-credit-hour program provides the scientific knowledge and practical foundation needed to understand how aerospace and other austere environments affect human physiology, cognition and performance. You will study the effects of altered gravity, acceleration, hypobaric environments and other aerospace-related stressors on the human body through coursework in areas such as:

  • spatial disorientation
  • decompression physiology
  • thermoregulation
  • cardiovascular and respiratory physiology
  • exercise physiology
  • nutrition for extreme conditions and human factors

As commercial spaceflight, military aviation and federal aerospace initiatives continue to expand, so does the need for professionals who understand the physiological challenges of human performance in extreme environments. Through coursework, educational projects and research experiences, this program equips you with the scientific knowledge and practical foundation needed for careers in aerospace medicine, research physiology, operational physiology and related fields.
