What you like about working at Case Western Reserve University:

The emphasis on superb medical care with integrated departments to ensure comprehensive care for our patients, the focus on education and training for the residents/fellows with biweekly conferences, pig labs, mock orals and one on one teaching in the operating room and on the floors. The personal relationships between staff and trainees and the extent of time spent rotating at a variety of different hospitals including a tertiary university hospital setting with a gamut of incredibly complex patients with complex medical and surgical problems, the VA hospitals where a number of complex and bread and butter open cases are performed in addition to endovascular cases, a county hospitals that includes a Level 1 Trauma Center where critical care and vascular trauma are emphasized and a private hospital setting.

What you like about living in Cleveland:

Cleveland will surprise you with its culture, vitality and wealth of opportunities outside the hospital. This city is so much more than the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The restaurant scene, Playhouse Square, concerts at Blossom and Severance Hall, three professional sports teams and street festivals almost every week in the summertime that celebrate the rich heritage to be found here. The Metroparks system adds truly gorgeous outdoor space to each season. Cleveland is also an incredible value on a resident’s salary. Many of us own homes and raise families while here.

What you like about living in Cleveland:

Cleveland is a vibrant and diverse city. I have been pleased to discover there are many opportunities for fun. Some of the highlights so far have been dinners in Little Italy, boating on the lake, concerts at the House of Blues and Nautica Pavilion, ballgames at Jacobs Field and the arts scene in the Uptown district.

Duke-National University of Singapore

Internship:
General Surgery Duke University; National University

What you like about living in Cleveland:

I knew very little about Cleveland before I showed up for work and truth be told, I was pleasantly surprised! Cleveland definitely punches above its weight class in the food and cultural scene. For a busy surgical resident, there’s always something to do or see, and at much more affordable prices that in most of our neighboring metropolises. I also didn’t anticipate how nice it was to have easy access to the water and a beach and ended up moving so I would be right next to Edgewater after my first year. So far, Case has been a great place to train in terms of surgical volume and case complexity and to kick back and relax after a hard day at work!

Jones Thomas

Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2)

Medical Education:
Rutgers, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School

What you like about living in Cleveland:

After receiving his bachelor's in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Rutgers University, Jones stayed on at Rutgers University's Robert Wood Johnson Medical School to earn his MD degree. Despite having done all his education, from elementary school to medical school, within 10 miles of his family home in New Jersey, Jones found himself right at home in Cleveland! Between the vibrant food scene, the myriad options for sports indoor and out, and everything related to Lake Erie, there's plenty to keep his free time occupied! If he's not operating or studying, you'll probably find him kicking around on one of many indoor (or outdoor) soccer fields around town or road tripping with his wife!
